Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Cha.
Hi Alex, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My story started when I was 10. My dad wanted to introduce me to music. As an immigrant son he never had the chance to learn music. He wanted me to have an extra set of skills. So we took a community adult school beginner guitar class together. I caught on fast and enjoyed learning how to play. The teacher noticed how well I was progressing and suggested that I join one of his student rock bands. That was my first experience playing in a band. My skills grew during that time and by 9th grade I decided to start my own band. During this time in high school, we were able to get gigs and perform at many events. We even got booked at The Whiskey A GoGo. My band became the first band of Hmong descent to have performed there. When I went to college, my band got booked at larger events such as festivals, fairs, and now getting more paid gigs. We recently performed at the Monterey County Fair on 9/6/26. Having led this band for the last 8 years, I have learned and experienced what it means to work hard, how to work with people, giving back to the community, sharing music with others, and being humble. I’m currently 22 and now a senior college student majoring in chemistry.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It hasn’t been a smooth road. There were many obstacles I’ve had to overcome. The most common and most hindering struggles were, 1. finding a team that works well together and 2. balancing my time between school, band, and everything else.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a musician. I lead a rock band. I write songs. I specialize in playing guitar and singing. I am known for always putting on an entertaining show for the audience. I’ve been complimented for performing right up to and in front of my audience. Yes, right into their personal space. I am proud of being the first band of Hmong descent to have performed at The Whiskey A GoGo and of having been able to perform out of state. What sets me apart from others is my persistence to get through struggles, work with and interacting with my community and supporters, and my ability to put on a great show.
What’s next?
My plans for the future are to finish my full album and get it released. I’d like to perform more around California such as the Central Coast, Los Angeles, the Bay Area, and Sacramento. Dreaming big, I would love the chance to perform nationally and internationally.
