Check Out Carlos Mendivil’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Carlos Mendivil.

Hi Carlos, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey started in 2008 while studying Media Arts and Graphic Design at New Mexico Highlands University. I was fortunate to begin working on professional projects early, including work with New Mexico museums, Cultural Affairs, and the Governor’s Gallery. Those experiences pushed me beyond traditional graphic design into branding, photography, web, interactive media, and exhibition work.

After graduating in 2010, I continued expanding my experience through advertising, marketing, and creative agencies, eventually working with brands ranging from Marriott and Starwood Hotels to Red Bull, Phoenix Rising FC, MLB Spring Training, and many small and growing businesses.

Throughout that time, I was also building my own businesses. I founded Mendivil Media in 2008 and co-founded Mya Kai Creative in 2014. Working across agencies, brands, and my own businesses gave me a unique perspective on how creative work connects to the larger business.

Today, Mendivil Media is really the culmination of that experience. My work has evolved from simply creating things to understanding **why they need to be created in the first place** — bringing strategy, design, and execution together to help businesses build stronger brands and move forward.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Building a creative business while also growing as a designer meant constantly adapting — learning new technologies, taking on different roles, and figuring out how to create value beyond simply making things look good.

One of the biggest challenges has been learning that being good at the creative work is only part of the equation. You also have to understand business, communicate effectively, manage relationships, sell your value, and keep moving forward when things don’t go as planned.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
At its core, Mendivil Media helps businesses build stronger brands and digital experiences. My work spans brand strategy, identity, graphic design, websites, digital media, marketing, and content. I’m able to bring those disciplines together rather than treating each piece as a separate project.

I think I’m best known for taking a lot of moving pieces and creating clarity — figuring out what a business needs to say, how it should look, and how everything should work together. My background across design, marketing, agencies, and entrepreneurship has given me a perspective that goes beyond the deliverable.

What I’m most proud of is the range of work I’ve been able to create and the relationships I’ve built along the way. I’ve worked with everything from museums and national brands to startups and local businesses, and I enjoy bringing the same level of thought and attention to each.

What sets me apart is really the combination of strategy, design, and execution. I’m not interested in creating something that simply looks good. I want to understand the business behind it, solve the right problem, and create work that has a reason to exist — and ultimately helps the business move forward.

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
Something that might surprise people is how much of my career has involved the arts and cultural world. Before Mendivil Media became what it is today, I worked on museum exhibitions, public art installations, historical exhibits, and cultural projects throughout New Mexico — including projects for the Governor’s Gallery and New Mexico museums.

I think people tend to see the branding and digital work I do today and assume that’s where my background began. In reality, those early experiences taught me to think about design as storytelling and communication, not just aesthetics. That perspective has stayed with me and still influences how I approach my work today
