Today we’d like to introduce you to Jack Krull.
Jack, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Hey, Jack here!
I’m a wedding and elopement photographer based in Santa Barbara. I’ve been tinkering and shooting on film and digital cameras for 15 years now. You can often find me grabbing coffee at Handlebar, slowly biking up Gibraltar, or zipping by on my red Vespa with my wife Carley. I’m also a big scifi and fantasy enthusiast. Recent reads include Red Rising, The Wheel of Time, Dune, The Lord of the Rings and anything and everything Brandon Sanderson.
I would describe myself as an artist first. I’m a film-forward photographer with an eye for capturing the authentic in-between moments and effortless, almost casual portraits. Working with me feels laid back and conversational. I believe in laughing a lot and providing a healthy mix of directive cues to bring photos to life with genuine reactions and natural movement.
I can’t imagine starting my photography business anywhere else. The community of wedding photographers and vendors on the Central Coast is unbelievably supportive and generous. I attribute so much of my success to amazing mentors like Sharon Ko and Montana Dennis, and wedding planners that always have my back like Club Amore Weddings and C.C. Designs.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There has been a lot of learning along the way as I continue to build my photography business, but overall I feel extremely blessed. With a resurgence of film photography and a craving for authentic, timeless moments in the wedding industry, the timing couldn’t have been better for a film nerd like me to jump in. And again, I can’t say enough how amazing and supportive the community of wedding photographers in Santa Barbara has been!
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in shooting on all-manual film cameras like my Leica M6, Mamiya 6, and Pentax K1000. There is a special flow state you can reach when you are fully immersed in a place, the light, the moment, the emotion. Besides all the camera stuff I just love to connect my my couples and watch them enjoy some of the best days of their lives.
