Today we’d like to introduce you to Jag Farrah.
Hi Jag, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I am a surfer, musician and graphic artist born in LA and raised in Ventura. I started off my early life surfing semi-professionally, modeling and traveling internationally with Billabong and Reef. Since I was homeschooled to follow my surfing career, I had extra time to dive into writing songs. I ended up choosing to pursue music over surfing. I moved back to LA and dedicated my life to being in the studio every night, submitting songs to labels and finding my footing in sync music. I recently changed my artist name from Cat Clark to Jag Farrah, and my first release under my new name was a single called “Dream” with professional skater Dashawn Jordan featuring Logic. I have been able to integrate into the surf and skate community in Los Angeles, and was able to design my first skate deck in collaboration with Concrete Queenz and Dogtown. Concrete Queenz is a non-profit made to provide free skate lessons for girls at underserved schools in South LA. Aside from music, being able to help girls learn to skate and find their flow, while helping CQ with their merch has been an incredibly fulfilling experience.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Absolutely not. Being an artist isn’t about glitz and glamour. A lot of this path comes with struggles, late nights, unpaid hours and competing against the best in the industry for a spot at the table. You have to be cut from a different cloth to stick around long enough to see some success in music. But even when that success comes, the grind never stops. I’ve had times I had to sleep in my car, scrounge change for meals and really lift myself up mentally to get through low points. But I’m proud to say I never compromised my integrity for opportunities. I always bet on my talent and work ethic. It’s gotten me in rooms a lot of people dream to get in. It’s important as a woman to know that we CAN get where we want to go without compromising morals, even if it’s a longer road.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am an artist but I’m also a working songwriter/musician. As a working professional in the music industry, the skillset I’ve developed comes with some diversity. Sometimes I write for artists, sometimes for TV/film, and I’ve recently really loved creating sample catalogues with my producer friends. That gives me a lot of freedom of creativity without the bounds of job-specific work. Since starting samples, I landed a production credit for my sampled vocals on Chance the Rapper’s “Just a Drop” record featuring Jay Electonica on his recent album. Shoutout to Void Stryker and Stix for co-producing that joint. I also landed my first feature film sync in “One of Them Days” starring Keke Palmer and SZA. That was really cool to hear in theaters. Though, I think my biggest accomplishment has been prioritizing my own music over other opportunities. I’m really excited be be approaching my first album release. I’ve been working with my super talented friends Criss Cullen and Daniel Spool and they’ve pushed me into an experimental realm with my music. I’ve enjoyed that process so much, and they’ve become some of my closest friends in the process.
