Today we’d like to introduce you to Kaden Potter.
Hi Kaden, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My name is Kaden Potter, I am 23 year old professional dancer and creative artist originally from Kansas City now located in Los Angeles, CA. my dance journey started when I was about 11 years old when I just started moving around in my living room and garage being inspired from youtube videos. I was inspired by artist Fikshun, the group Kinjaz, the show SYTYCD (So You Think You Can Dance), and. WOD (World of Dance)
I started dancing within a studio and then competed for a few years in highschool through my home dance studio in Shawnee Kansas called Dance Expressions owned by Erin Spriggs.
After graduating highschool I moved out to Las Vegas and attended a dance intensive program called TAPS (Theater Arts Prep School) through TAPS I got signed to MSA Talent Agency out in Los Angeles and not long after moved out to LA.
After moving out to Los Angeles I attended Erin Marinos dance intensive LA Establishment. following the conclusion of that program i’ve been continuing my training, working, and living out in Los Angeles. I’ve had some amazing opportunities to perform and be apart of some pretty amazing projects since being out here.
I’ve worked on Skechers body doubling Martha Stewart, I walked in Vogue with actress Julia Garner, performed for a live Taco Bell event, toured with Vietnamese artist Truc Nhan, and have been apart of some amazing music videos and other projects that I cannot share too much about coming out this winter.
On the side of dancing I work out here in Los Angeles at a coffee shop serving up some amazing cups of joe, I like to do photography, videography, and along with those am working on my own personal brand Truth Creative Collective with long term goals of ending up back in Kansas City with my own art studio of some sort incorporating all of my passions and hobbies in some degree.
That’s all about me! Thank you
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The journey has not been light but it has been rewarding in so many ways. You go through dry seasons of not booking anything while training day after day because it’s what you love to do. It can be draining and mentally taxing. As a dancer injuries can set you back heavily. Even just a slight toe injury has put me out for 1-2 months. Or slightly pulling a muscle. I have developed some very healthy habits of working out, running, eating well, and going to hot yoga classes all to keep my mind and body in check.
Along with all those things being away from home isn’t the easiest but I couldn’t be happier where I am at and love to make an extended visit back home when possible.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a dancer here in Los Angeles, I work at a coffee shop some days in the mornings and afternoons. When I am not working I am constantly in the studios out here in Los Angeles training. Movement Lifestyle, Millennium Dance Complex (MDC), and Tmilly are some of the studios I frequently train at. I feel I am known best for my well roundedness as I train in all sorts of styles focusing on Hip Hop, Street Jazz, and my own Freestyling.
Having the ability to freestyle on the spot when asked and throw some flips and tricks is what sets me apart from others and really brings a wow factor to any performance or situation.
I am most proud of my resilience and drive to keep going. I won’t stop. I do give my self breaks and grace but my passion and love for the game will keep me afloat and going in this industry for a long time.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
Right place right time and being a good person. People want to work with and hire good people. Talk to everyone and be kind to everyone and it will come back in life and professionally. I treat my life as the professional jobs I want to work on.
For example I was going to the jazz class I attend every Monday and Wednesday with dance legend Helene Phillips who has been in the industry for a very long time. I was 30 minutes early to class and ran into some dancers I had met at a event somewhat recently not realizing they we’re there for an audition, next thing you know I am getting asked if I want to audition in the room with Fatima Robinson. One month later my agent sending me an email saying I booked on Vogue. Right place right time.
