Today we’d like to introduce you to PK Walters.
Hi PK, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I originally started my creations while still working in Tech,, a challenging job that pushed me to use my art as an evening form of relaxation. Using the right side of my brain at night cleared the left side for my day job. I always dressed well for my meetings and at one point wanted a special necklace. I searched Beverly Hills and all top designers, ending with disappointment The pieces I had yearned for in magazines did not live up to their price tags in person and they were in every store. I started tearing apart my extensive collection of high end vintage accessories and began making the pieces I wanted to see. All one of a kind creations. All uniquely special pieces to cherish.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
In the beginning I did not think of selling anything. I was designing pieces I wanted, I still design that way. When people started asking to buy them, it was basically friends and their friends then their friends. People came to me from seeing a piece on someone. It is still like that but just expanded to International Fashion Weeks with named designers and high end stores. My PR groups were a great deal of help along the way and without them I would not have the success I have had to date. Most notably The Pop Group / LA and London for over 7 years now and for one year Flying Solo in NYC and Paris. One thing of great importance is to Trademark your name and company / designs etc prior to releasing it to the public. It’s a cost you have to suffer and you will still be copied, but the TM is important to your partners and clients for authenticity.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am considered a sustainable jewelry and accessories designer/ maker. I take trash to treasure basically. What sets my work apart is the “trash” I use. Some pieces are found in recycle metal bins in small towns in France or I have used a beaver skull from the Puches in Paris or buckles found on tables in the back streets of Spain or London flea markets. I describe myself as a raccoon always seeking something shiny or of interest. My materials can cost very little or be something so rare that it is priceless. I price according to cost of goods, not adding time or effort. I see great possibility in almost all things. I once found a clock face in a metal bin that turned out to be from the clock maker famous for supplying clocks to the aristocracy during the time of Marie Antoinette!
The main thing is to keep your eyes open. Put down your phone. Pick things up and imagine what it could become. Set your mind free to create.
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
Artists and creatives are often quite introverted and very happy to create in their private space, many not ever considering sharing their creations with the outside world and even if considered would not know where to start. That describes me in a nutshell. It is important to break out of that shell and experience the joy that other people derive from your creativity and your efforts. There is a saying ( goes something like this) “they can call you a designer, but until it’s on people’s body’s or in their homes, it’s just a hobby.” Be bold, be brave and release your creations to the world.
