Check Out Tristin Tracy’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tristin Tracy.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Photography has been part of my life forever. I started taking photography classes in junior high and high school at Anacapa School, where I spent six years learning everything from composition to developing film in the darkroom. My Canon Rebel went everywhere with me, and I photographed anything I could, especially the beautiful architecture and gardens of Casa del Herrero, where my grandparents lived. Growing up there sparked not only my love of photography but also my appreciation for Santa Barbara and the incredible places I now get to share with my clients.

Although I considered pursuing photography professionally after high school, I took a different path and spent many years managing a fine jewelry store. It wasn’t until after my son was born that I rediscovered photography in a completely new way. In 2021, I watched a friend photograph a maternity session at sunset, and something clicked. I remembered how much I loved creating beautiful images and knew I wanted to build a career celebrating families and preserving this season of their lives.

I launched Tristin Tracy Photography in May 2021 with a Canon R5, countless hours of learning, and friends and family who generously let me practice. What began as a leap of faith quickly grew into a thriving business.

Today, I specialize in family, newborn, maternity, and proposal photography throughout Santa Barbara. My work is centered on creating a relaxed experience where families can simply enjoy being together. Less posing, more genuine connection. My goal is to create photographs that feel timeless today and become part of a family’s history for generations to come.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Like most small business owners, there have definitely been challenges along the way. When I launched my business in 2021, I wasn’t just learning how to become a better photographer. I was also learning marketing, SEO, bookkeeping, client communication, website design, pricing, and everything else that comes with running a business. Wearing every hat at once was overwhelming at times.

One of the biggest challenges has been balancing growth with family life. My husband and I have a young son, and I wanted to build a successful business without missing the moments that mattered most at home. From the beginning, I was intentional about creating systems and workflows that would allow me to provide an exceptional client experience while also protecting time with my family.

I’ve also learned that saying “yes” to every opportunity isn’t sustainable. As my business has grown, I’ve become more selective about the work I take on and have built relationships with trusted associates who share my approach to photography. That has allowed me to serve more families while maintaining the level of care and consistency that my clients expect.

Looking back, every challenge has pushed me to improve. Whether it’s refining my client experience, streamlining my workflow, or becoming a better educator, each obstacle has ultimately helped shape the business I have today.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a family and newborn lifestyle photographer based in Santa Barbara, and I specialize in creating relaxed, connection-focused portraits for families, couples, and parents-to-be. While I photograph proposals, maternity, newborns, and extended families as well, my heart has always been helping families preserve this quick season of life.

What sets my work apart is that I focus just as much on the experience as I do the photographs themselves. Many of my clients tell me they don’t love being in front of the camera or worry that their children won’t cooperate. My job is to put everyone at ease. I gently guide the session, but I leave plenty of room for genuine interaction, play, and the little moments that can’t be posed. The result is a gallery that feels authentic to each family rather than a collection of perfectly posed portraits.

I’m also deeply committed to making the entire process feel seamless, from the first inquiry through the delivery of a custom heirloom album. I believe beautiful photographs deserve to live beyond a screen, and one of my favorite parts of the experience is designing albums that become part of a family’s history.

I’m especially proud that my business has grown almost entirely through referrals and relationships within the Santa Barbara community. As a fourth-generation Santa Barbaran, it’s incredibly meaningful to photograph families in the places that shaped my own childhood and to know that many of my clients return year after year as their families grow. There is no greater compliment than being trusted to document someone’s story over time.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
I definitely didn’t build this business alone. My husband, Jason, has been my biggest supporters from the very beginning. With his background in marketing and business, he’s helped me think strategically about everything from branding and pricing to long-term business growth. He’s also been incredibly supportive behind the scenes, giving me the confidence to pursue this dream.

Professionally, my biggest mentor has been Elena S. Blair. Her education and philosophy around family photography had a huge impact on how I approach both my work and my business. She challenged me to create a client experience that feels just as meaningful as the photographs themselves.

I’m also grateful for the community of photographers who have encouraged me along the way. Friends like Becca Jean Photography and Lyndsay Hannah Photography have been wonderful sounding boards, cheerleaders, and generous colleagues. Photography can feel like a competitive industry, but I’ve been fortunate to be surrounded by people who genuinely support one another.

Finally, I’m so thankful for my clients. Many have returned year after year as their families have grown, and their trust means everything to me. There’s no greater compliment than being invited back to document another chapter of a family’s story.
