Today we’d like to introduce you to Eliot Winder.
Hi Eliot, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’m Eliot Winder. I build small business websites out of Santa Barbara, and I call it WinderForge.
It started as side work, honestly. My background is in live events and production, so I spent years being the guy responsible for a hundred things coming together right before the doors open. On the side, I’d build websites for people I knew. A friend’s shop here, somebody’s new business there. I was teaching myself to code the whole time, figuring it out one problem at a time.
The more sites I built, the more I kept bumping into the same thing. If you’re a small business owner and you need a website, your options are kind of rough. The DIY builders are cheap, but now you’ve got a second job, and most people quit halfway through. Hire a cheap freelancer and sure, they’ll build you something, then try reaching them when it breaks six months later. And the local agencies that do genuinely great work want three, five, ten grand and a couple months, and you can’t even see a price until you book a call.
So the middle basically disappeared. A real website, made by a real person, at a price a normal business can actually swing. That gap is the whole reason WinderForge exists.
Those side projects turned into the real thing. Now it’s what I do: hand built sites for small and local businesses, me personally checking every page, prices posted right on the homepage, and your site live in about a week. I’m taking on founding customers right now, and it’s the best work I’ve done.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Smooth? No. But the hard parts have mostly been the good kind of hard.
The big one is that it’s just me. I’m the designer, the developer, the sales guy, the support line, and the person who answers when something breaks at 9pm. Every hat, my head. That’s kind of the whole point (hire WinderForge and you get an actual human who’s on the hook), but it makes for some long days.
I also taught myself to code to do this. I’ve been building my own computers since I was a teenager, so the technical side doesn’t scare me, but going from “I’m good with tech” to “I’m shipping real sites that people paid for” is a completely different mountain. A lot of late nights went into that one.
Then there’s trust, which is the tricky part. You show up new, your prices are lower than the agencies, and people naturally wonder where the catch is. There isn’t one. It’s founding-customer pricing while I build a track record. But landing those first few clients with basically no portfolio to point at is the hardest part of starting anything. Every site I finish makes the next conversation a little easier.
And I’ll be straight about the timing. My son was born in October 2025, right as this was starting to take off. Building a business and figuring out how to be a dad at the same time has been the hardest thing I’ve ever done. It’s also the whole reason I’m doing it. The site I build for your business is helping me take care of mine.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about WinderForge?
WinderForge builds small business websites that actually pull their weight. Hand-built, by me, here in Santa Barbara. You’ll see a preview in a few days and be live in about seven to ten.
The whole thing is a reaction to how small businesses usually get treated. Most sites get built once and then just forgotten. A year later it’s dated. Three years later it’s honestly working against you. That drives me nuts, because your website is where somebody decides whether they trust you before they’ve ever met you. It should show up when people search, look like you, work on a phone, and sound the way you’d actually talk.
The process is simple. You fill out a short intake, maybe 5 to 15 minutes. I build the whole draft and look at every page myself. We do a round or two of changes. Then it goes live, usually inside a week. Every build comes with mobile-friendly design, SEO that starts with your Google Business Profile, a secure connection, a full year of hosting, a 30-day refund window, and two weeks of free edits after launch.
The prices sit right on the homepage, which almost nobody in this business does. Right now, founding-customer rates run from $150 for a solo operator’s site up to $245 for a multi-location build. Anything bigger or weirder than that, I just quote it. There’s also an optional Care Plan at $19.99 a month for owners who want their reviews handled in their own voice, their Google profile kept current, and real SEO work every month instead of a site that just sits there.
At the end of the day, I build for the working businesses that hold the Central Coast together. The contractors, the restaurants, the service pros, the creatives.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I was the kid who took stuff apart to see how it worked. And, the important part, actually got it back together. I built my first computer around 2000, back in my teens, and I’ve built every machine I’ve owned since. I’ve lost count, but it’s north of fifteen. That’s pretty much the theme of my whole life. I like building things with my hands and understanding how they work all the way down.
Back then it was anything I could get into. Computers, video games, cars. Still is, honestly. I still wrench on cars and mod them for fun. Give me a project and a problem to chew on and I’m a happy guy.
So me ending up building websites tracks. Same exact itch. Take something complicated, figure out how the pieces fit, and build something that works and that I’ll happily put my name on. The tools are different now. The rest of it really isn’t.
