Conversations with Adam Sewell

Today we’d like to introduce you to Adam Sewell.

Hi Adam, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I was raised in South Africa where we had two hours of PE after school five days a week. PE included soccer, rugby, cricket, field hockey, tennis, swimming, track and field and cross country running. That type of upbringing creates a natural athlete. Balance, proprioception, and biomechanics all come naturally to you after a childhood like that. I have also lived in other countries around the world so my eclectic background lends itself to a lifetstyle with varied interests and various different careers.

I was born in England and my family moved to Germany when I was six months old. A year later we moved to Zambia and a year after that, we moved to South Africa for 10 years before moving to Spain, where I reluctantly attended high school! I bounced between Spain, Ireland, and England before I moved to the Caribbean to work on the cruise ships. That lasted three years until I moved to Los Angeles, then Colorado than back to California but farther north. I have been in the Bay Area for 22 years.

Along the way, I have worked as a lifeguard, horse riding instructor, casino croupier, bodyguard, stuntman, fitness instructor, yoga teacher, martial arts instructor, luxury estate manager, and now, among other things, I own a horse archery club and teach horsemanship.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has definitely not been a smooth road!

While I have different professions all going at the same time, most of my work is part time so basically, I’m a gig worker so income ebbs and flows. Many people are reluctant to hire someone with such a varied resumé, so that has had its challenges.

I am pretty easy going and chase the fun more than chasing the money. Unfortunately this means I will probably never be able to retire!

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
In my early 20s I became a stuntman and have never stopped training for action oriented sports since then. As a stuntman, and working for Bay Area Stunts, I’m basically a professional athlete. I have to be multi faceted, and perform at a high level in various different sports from skiing to driving cars; from martial arts to riding horses, and more. Fights, high falls, motorcycles, are just a few of the many sports in which you have to be a high level performer. I also have to be able to rig actors and stunt performers to fly on wires.
In the stunt arena, most of my stunt work comes in the form of stunt driving on films and tv commercials.

I’ve created a business that teaches a fitness/wellness/action oriented lifestyle.
In fitness/wellness, I specialize in a yoga-based calisthenics style biomechanics training.

Sometimes I travel overseas with my fitness clients and support them on cycling trips in the Alps. This includes running a support van, scheduling, and being a medic for them. When we return stateside, I train them in their homes and I also housesit for them when they go on vacation.

With my horse archery club, I specialize in training the horses and teaching my students to develop their horsemanship. I also teach horsemanship clinics for kids, which is a lot of fun and very rewarding. Sometimes I travel to compete in horse archery. This month, I’ll be traveling to France for the largest competition in the world.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up I was pretty introverted. I was forced to play sports in an all boys school, which forced me to be a team player, something I was not good and and with which I still have a hard time today. I was was raised in Africa, and then in Spain for my high school years. Both places are very different from the Bay Area! They were more old school AND on the other side of the world! I was always interested in horses and martial arts, which is what led me to stunt work and horse archery.
