Conversations with Agnieszka Kazmierczak

Today we’d like to introduce you to Agnieszka Kazmierczak.

Agnieszka, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Years ago my dear friends Jim and Gloria Dougherty invited me to what I thought was a Carmel garden tour. It ended up being a class that was put on by a wonderful local florist Annette Kunz featuring the incredible Gregor H. Lersch. I had no idea of who he was, yet that day and his class changed the course of my life. I had a background in art and design since a very young age, yet floral design I ignorantly thought was a very delicate and pretty affair. And then Mr. Lersch came out to teach his class and with his big persona and design extraordinaire attitude he started building sculptures from branches and such unusual flowers that I was in awe of every move and floral choice. As he was building with my design background I anticipated his moves. As he placed them where in my eye’s mind I thought they should go, humbly knowing I was in the presence of a master, I thought to myself “Now, that I can do”. In that moment I decided to be a florist, overnight like Elle Woods in Legally Blonde. At the time professionally I worked in the Food & Wine industry which I loved. I was a service trainer and supervisor at Sierra Mar Restaurant at the Post Ranch Inn in Big Sur, working for the legendary General Manager Wanda Straw. Knowing Ms. Straw was leaving Sierra Mar to write a book, and knowing I wanted to be a creative for a living and newly inspired I I took a leap of faith. After Mr. Lersch’s class, just like that I became on overnight entrepreneur and florist.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
11 years ago as a new business owner in an industry I knew very little about I had so much to learn along the way. I came into my business understanding and having an eye for design and high end quality. Everything else I had to learn. Flower names, sourcing, pricing, accounting and so on. Yet, I live my life by the belief that “everyday I should learn something new”, so starting my business with so much to learn was thrilling to me, and still is.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in unusual large floral hotel displays, big and bright corporate events and magical weddings. I love big and bold design, working with color, designing original looks and using unique florals. My work has a distinctive look and design that is recognized as unmistakably mine. I source primarily from local growers to support their industry and strongly believe in giving back to community in floral and financial donations to non-profits and other charitable groups.
