Today we’d like to introduce you to Bill Ortega.
Bill, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started playing the trumpet at the age of 8 and have had many musical influences in both sides of my family mist notably my grandfather’s. Two of my current projects are my salsa band of 31 years Orquesta Borinquen started by my father and I. Another notable project is Patron Latin Rhythms of which is also a legacy band. I’m a multi instrumentalist in trumpet, percussion and vocalist.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Some struggles included starting giggin at 15 years old it wasn’t always easy and some veteran players weren’t always welcoming and helpful
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
As a musician I play professionally as well as hold down a day job. I’ve been able to travel playing, participate in recordings/albums and music videos. I’m also currently a voting member for the Grammys for the last 10 years
What was your favorite childhood memory?
Always being surrounded by live music , love and laughter. I once was able to be in the same stage as my two grandfathers, dad and cousin
