Conversations with Elsa Duenez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Elsa Duenez.

Hi Elsa, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Fitness has always been more than just working out for me; it became a way to build confidence, discipline, and purpose. I started as a personal trainer with a dream of creating a space where people of all fitness levels could feel welcome, supported, and inspired. What began as a small private training studio eventually grew into Paradise Gym, a 24-hour private gym in San Dimas, California.

Building this business hasn’t been easy. Like many small business owners, I’ve faced setbacks, financial challenges, and moments where giving up would have been the easier option. But every obstacle pushed me to work harder and stay committed to the vision I had from the beginning. Today, I’m proud to own a gym that continues to grow, supports an incredible community, and provides opportunities for trainers and members to become the best versions of themselves.

As a female business owner in a traditionally male-dominated industry, I’ve learned that success comes from consistency, resilience, and genuinely caring about the people you serve. My goal has never been to create just another gym…. I wanted to build a community where people feel like family, where everyone is encouraged regardless of where they’re starting, and where health becomes a lifelong lifestyle.

Looking ahead, I have big dreams for Paradise Gym, including expanding the brand and adding new services that continue to support our members’ health and wellness. Every challenge I’ve faced has reinforced one thing: if you’re willing to stay committed to your vision and outwork the obstacles, incredible things can happen.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Like most entrepreneurs, I’ve faced my share of challenges: financial risks, long hours, unexpected setbacks, and the constant pressure of wearing every hat as a business owner. There were moments where I questioned whether I could keep going, especially while managing renovations, equipment investments, staffing, and the day-to-day operations of a 24/7 gym.

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that obstacles are inevitable, but how you respond to them defines your business. I’ve had to make difficult decisions, solve problems on the fly, and continue leading even during stressful situations. As a female business owner in the fitness industry, I’ve also had to work hard to earn respect and prove that I belong in a space that’s often male-dominated.

Every challenge has made me a stronger leader. Instead of seeing setbacks as failures, I see them as opportunities to improve, adapt, and build something even better. Looking back, those difficult moments shaped Paradise Gym into what it is today, and they’ve made me even more excited about the future.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am the owner of Paradise Gym, a private, female-owned 24-hour training facility in San Dimas, California. Aside from being the Founder of Paradise Gym, I am also a personal trainer as well; I specialize in strength training, body transformations, and helping clients build sustainable lifestyles rather than chasing quick fixes. As a coach, I focus on educating my clients so they understand the “why” behind their training and nutrition, giving them the tools to succeed long after our sessions together.

What I’m most proud of is building Paradise Gym completely from the ground up. As a single female business owner in a male-dominated industry, there were countless obstacles and moments where giving up would have been easier. Instead, I continued investing in my vision, expanding into a facility that now serves hundreds of members and offers a private, high-quality environment that people genuinely love being a part of.

What sets me apart is that I don’t just own a gym — I live the lifestyle every single day. I’m on the gym floor coaching, interacting with members, improving the facility, and constantly looking for ways to provide a better experience. Every decision I make is centered around creating a place where people feel inspired, challenged, and valued. My business isn’t just where I work; it’s something I’ve poured my heart into, and seeing the confidence and life changes our members experience is the greatest reward.

My mission has always been simple: build more than a gym, build a community where people can change their lives.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
My favorite childhood memory has to be one of my birthdays. I believe I was 7 or 8… We didn’t grow up with a lot of money — just my brother and me — but my parents always made sure we had everything we truly needed and always found ways to make us feel special.

On my birthday, they told us to take our bags outside because we were going to celebrate. When we walked out, my dad pulled up in an RV. I had no idea what was happening until they told us we were taking a road trip to San Francisco to visit Alcatraz Island.

I had watched a movie about Alcatraz when I was younger and had always wanted to see it in person, so it was the biggest surprise. I remember feeling so excited and, honestly, pretty cool because I had recently taken cooking classes. During the drive, I made my “famous” wrap and an orange float that I had learned how to make in class, and I was so proud of myself.

Looking back, it wasn’t about the RV or even the destination. It was about the love and effort my parents put into creating unforgettable memories for us, even when money was tight. That trip taught me that the most meaningful gifts aren’t always expensive — they’re the experiences you share with the people you love.
