Today we’d like to introduce you to Chris Shake.
Hi Chris, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
In 1956, when Chris Shake was born into Monterey’s tight-knit Italian community, the rhythm of his life was already set by the tides of the bay. His parents, who had arrived in the early 1950s, instilled in him a work ethic as enduring as the Monterey wharf itself. For Shake, the wharf wasn’t just a destination; it was his classroom, his playground, and his life’s work.
While most children were navigating the hallways of middle school, a young Shake was charting a different course. He made the pivotal decision to leave formal education after the seventh grade, choosing instead to apprentice under his father at the family’s crown jewel: the Old Fisherman’s Grotto.
His education was unconventional but rigorous. In the kitchen, he was mentored by his father and French Creole chefs from New Orleans, mastering the nuances of flavor and technique. By the age of 14, he was already running his own station on the line. But Shake knew that a great restaurateur needed more than culinary skill. He began shadowing his father in boardrooms, sitting in on meetings with bankers and attorneys, and spending his spare time at the local library to bridge any gaps in his professional knowledge.
Today, the company has grown into a significant hospitality and real estate operation. Chris and his brother, Sabu Jr., now operate four restaurants across Monterey and Kona, Hawaii, alongside a portfolio of commercial real estate, apartments, and motels throughout the Monterey Peninsula, employing a dedicated team of over 400 people. It is a family enterprise in every sense, now entering its third generation with the arrival of Chris’s son, Austin, who has joined the company to carry the tradition forward.
Beyond the business, the Shake family’s impact on the Monterey Peninsula remains profound. Driven by a desire to honor their father’s memory, Chris and Sabu Jr. co-founded fundraising efforts that have now raised more than $7 million for the Salvation Army, providing a vital lifeline for those in need across the community. Chris’s contributions have been widely recognized, including being named Citizen of the Year by the Monterey Peninsula Chamber of Commerce and Hospitality Professional of the Year by the Monterey County Hospitality Association.
Outside of his professional life, Chris maintains a deep connection to the history of the region. He has curated an extensive historical photo collection of Monterey, which was recently showcased at the Monterey Museum of Art.
From the steam of the kitchen to the helm of a growing hospitality group, the story of Chris Shake and his family is a reminder that the most enduring legacies are built on hard work, a commitment to one’s roots, and a heart for the community.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The complexity of balancing high-standard service with the increasing burden of regulatory compliance is a reality many operators face today. Building a team that truly embodies your vision is the foundation of a successful guest experience, yet that effort is often overshadowed by the constant navigation of legal risks. It is a demanding environment where the margin for error is slim and the external pressures on small business owners continue to grow.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?

Honoring Our Heroes
We take great pride in honoring our military personnel. To show our appreciation, we place an American flag on their table, present them with a service coin, and offer a complimentary appetizer and dessert. This gesture is a small token of gratitude for their service and sacrifice.
A Tradition of Elegance
A unique touch that sets us apart is our tradition of gifting every lady a complimentary red rose after their meal service. This heartfelt practice, started by my dad in the 1960s using roses from his personal garden, continues to create special memories for our guests.
Our Commitment to Service
Old Fisherman’s Grotto is renowned for excellent food and outstanding service. Our team is dedicated to providing a welcoming atmosphere that reflects the old-school restaurant vibe, where every guest feels like family.

In essence, Old Fisherman’s Grotto is more than just a restaurant; it’s a celebration of family, community, and exceptional culinary experiences. We invite everyone to join us and become part of our ongoing legacy!
What are your plans for the future?
Our plan is for my son Austin to carry on the next generation of the family legacy that my mom and dad started in 1950.
