Today we’d like to introduce you to Fatimah Bey.
Hi Fatimah, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My adventure as a fashion designer began when I was seven years old. Long before I knew what a fashion career looked like, I was creating clothing for my Barbie dolls using socks, tissue paper, markers, glue, and safety pins. As I got older, my grandmother gifted me my first sewing machine, which sparked an even deeper passion for design. I began upcycling her glamorous garments and transforming thrifted pieces into something entirely new.
Over twenty years ago, I started pursuing fashion design professionally by attending college, but life had other plans. While working toward my education, opportunities in the creative industry began opening up. My talent led me into styling for music videos, working with artists, and participating in the Alternative Arts Fashion Show at Old Spitalfields Market in London. During my travels throughout Europe, including time spent in Paris sourcing luxurious fabrics and silks, I gained confidence in my abilities as a designer and creative entrepreneur.
My career later expanded into the entertainment industry when I moved to California and became a SAG-AFTRA actress. While working in film and television, I also explored casting, produced a film project, and continued styling for commercials, theater productions, and red-carpet events. Throughout this journey, fashion remained my first love.
In the midst of building my career, I also built a family. I am a proud mother of six children, many of whom participated in the entertainment industry as child actors. Whether attending premieres, red-carpet events, or family photo shoots, I was always the stylist behind the scenes. My personal brand, FeFe Bey, has been evolving for more than 25 years.
Determined to complete what I started, I returned to college and proudly earned my Associate Degree in Fashion Design and Product Development in February 2026. More recently, I became an author, soon to publish FeFe Bey’s Bridge to Hollywood: From Background to Foreground, a guide designed to help aspiring entertainers navigate the industry.
Today, I work in fashion product development and supply chain operations, supporting everything from website management and wholesale customer relations to product development and merchandising. I enjoy learning the business side of fashion while continuing to build my own brand and creative ventures.
At my core, I am an artist, designer, storyteller, and entrepreneur. No matter where my journey takes me, I am always creating, learning, and finding new ways to bring ideas to life.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My journey has been anything but smooth, but every challenge has helped shape the person I am today.
Throughout my life, I have experienced significant personal loss, including the passing of close family members and friends. I also faced challenges growing up without being raised by my parents, which taught me independence at an early age. Later, one of the most difficult chapters of my life was going through a divorce after many years of marriage while raising six children.
At one point, I felt like I had lost everything I had worked so hard to build. I left behind a life in California that included homeownership, a successful career in entertainment as a SAG-AFTRA actress, costume designer, producer, and stylist, and the professional network I had spent years developing. Relocating to Texas as a newly single mother meant rebuilding my life from the ground up while ensuring my children remained my top priority.
Rather than allowing those setbacks to define me, I chose to reinvent myself. I returned to school and completed my Associate Degree in Fashion Design and Product Development in 2026, something I had started years earlier but never had the opportunity to finish. It was important for me to create a sustainable career doing something I genuinely love while providing stability for my family.
Through it all, I have remained optimistic. I believe in helping others, bringing positivity into every room I enter, and finding solutions instead of dwelling on problems. I am naturally empathetic and deeply value human connection. While life has tested me many times, it has also taught me resilience, gratitude, and the importance of never giving up on yourself.
Today, I see every obstacle not as a setback, but as proof that I can adapt, overcome, and continue moving forward with purpose.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
At my core, I am a storyteller who uses fashion, art, media, and education as my canvas. While I am formally trained in Fashion Design and Product Development, my work extends beyond creating garments. I design experiences, tell stories through fabric, and create meaningful conversations around identity, resilience, culture, and transformation.
One of the projects I am most proud of is my collection, Ancestral Cry: Beauty for Ashes. This collection is deeply personal and explores themes of heritage, struggle, survival, and healing. Inspired by the African diaspora and the resilience of those who came before us, each garment tells a story. Through texture, color, silhouette, and symbolism, I wanted to transform pain into beauty and honor the strength that can emerge from hardship. More than a fashion collection, it is a visual testimony of overcoming adversity and finding purpose through life’s challenges.
Beyond fashion, I am also an author, SAG-AFTRA actress, producer, stylist, and entrepreneur. I recently completed my first book, FeFe Bey’s Bridge to Hollywood: From Background to Foreground, which was created to help aspiring entertainers navigate the industry with confidence and knowledge. I’m currently completing my Bachelor’s Degree in Applied Psychology with a concentration in Technology and Media. I want to combine both of my loves for tech, media, and fashion.
What sets me apart is my ability to merge creativity with real-life experience. I have spent decades working across fashion, entertainment, branding, product development, and storytelling. I understand both the artistic and business sides of creating something meaningful. Whether I am developing a collection, building a brand, styling a production, or working behind the scenes in product development, I approach every project with intention and heart.
Most importantly, I hope to use my voice to inspire women—especially women who have faced setbacks, loss, divorce, financial hardship, or the challenge of starting over. My life has taught me that creativity can be a form of healing and that it is never too late to reinvent yourself. If my work accomplishes anything, I hope it encourages others to embrace their story, recognize their worth, and boldly pursue their purpose.
I am an artist, but I am also a builder. Every collection, business venture, book, and creative project I create is rooted in the belief that beauty, resilience, and possibility can coexist—and that our greatest challenges often become the foundation for our greatest work.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
If I had to choose one quality that has contributed most to my success, it would be resilience. Throughout my life, I have experienced personal loss, career changes, financial setbacks, relocation, divorce, and the challenge of raising six children while continuing to pursue my dreams. At several points, it would have been easy to give up or accept that certain goals were no longer possible, but I have always found a way to adapt, learn, and move forward.
What makes that resilience possible is my optimism. I genuinely believe that every experience, whether good or bad, can teach us something valuable. I have learned how to rebuild, reinvent myself, and create new opportunities when old ones disappeared. That mindset allowed me to return to college and complete my Fashion Design and Product Development degree after more than twenty years, while balancing family responsibilities and work.
I am also deeply empathetic and people-oriented. I enjoy helping others, encouraging them, and finding ways to bring positivity into their lives. Whether through fashion, storytelling, speaking, mentoring, or simply how I interact with people, I want others to feel seen, valued, and inspired.
At the end of the day, my success is not defined by titles or accomplishments alone. It comes from my ability to persevere, remain authentic, and continue creating with purpose no matter what challenges come my way. Those qualities have shaped both my personal journey and the work I create as an artist, designer, entrepreneur, and storyteller.
👑 As I often say, they can’t have all of me. No matter what life brings, I always keep a piece of myself dedicated to my purpose, my creativity, and the things that bring me joy.
