Today we’d like to introduce you to Ron Nelson.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I was working in commercial art in early nineties graphic design, airbrushing, sign painting, and putting pinstripes on custom motorcycles and cars. A tattooist name Fester asked me to help around his shop and soon I was helping him design tattoos..I moved to New Orleans in 1996 and finished my apprenticeship at Doc Dons around 1999. Hurricane Katrina forced me and my family out of New Orleans and eventually moved to Santa Cruz. Opened my shop with some friends on Mission St. late 2013
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Broke both my wrists in a motorcycle accident. Took a year of surgery’s to be able to tattoo again. My boss at the time Danny Night really helped me during my recovery.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I prefer do tattoo black and grey nature themes in an illustrative style. But I enjoy most styles as long as they’re designed to hold up over time.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
Still prefer to use books for reference. Old scientific illustration books are my favorite.
