Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Ramirez.
Hi Alex, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I began my professional career as an inexperienced personal trainer in March 2010 at a local gym called Superior Fitness Center. Through countless hours of sweat and dedicated work in the gym and of course with the help of my mentor Dustin, I was able to develop the skills needed to become a knowledgeable and reliable trainer. In 2016 I started working for a senior retirement community called Valle Verde while also continuing to work at Superior Fitness. In 2020 when Covid hit, a lot of my clients became fearful of training indoors, so I very reluctantly stepped away from superior fitness to pursue my own business. I began training clients out of my garage, which I converted into a small gym. I also landscaped my outside yard with Astroturf and tires and rubber matting to accommodate outdoor training.
In 2024, I left Valley Verde and I began training full-time. As I grew and developed my business, I was finally able to open to support myself and open a brick and motor at 2830 De La Vina Street suite F in Santa Barbara, California, California.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The biggest obstacle was in the very beginning when I was first starting out. I was a waiter, working five days a week and I was trying to build my cliente base, so that I could supplement my income and leave the restaurant business permanently. It was a long and tough grind to try and balance out the evening shifts with daytime training. It took several years, but I was eventually able to bring my evening shifts down to two times a week, and I was training so much to the point where I finally felt comfortable leaving the restaurant forever. It was one of the proudest moments of my life, but also one of the hardest to accomplish.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
My business is a private and small group class training facility. I focus on strength, posture and performance. Among those who know me and who have worked with me, they know that I have a gentle approach to exercise and lifting weights. I can easily modify exercises for people based on their physical limitations or ability. And it’s not just a strength that I focus on. I have a holistic approach where I want people to be aware of their lifestyle habits like hydration and sleep. But in a Nutshell, I offer kick ass workouts that will challenge your upper and lower body, while simultaneously improving your core strength and balance.
The things that I am most proud of are, when my clients tell me how I’ve been able to improve their quality of life through exercise and healthy habits. It could be the smallest victory like people hiking up a huge summit, picking up a heavy household item or avoiding a slip and fall. It’s pretty cool to see how their confidence and demeanor changes as they build strength and vitality.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I strongly dislike olives, stinky cheese, some country music, most reality TV shows, inconsiderate, and bad drivers and I’m sorry if I offended you.
I really like pizza, filet mignon, going to the movies, working out, going for walks with my wife and dogs, hiking, going to the beach, cooking, and gardening.
