Today we’d like to introduce you to Bret Andersson.
Hi Bret, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Guardian Mold Testing really started with my own family’s experience with mold.
In 2022, my wife and I began noticing that something didn’t feel right in our home. I was dealing with allergy-like symptoms for the first time in my life, and my wife was experiencing congestion, burning eyes, and noticing strange smells in certain rooms. We both found ourselves avoiding parts of the house, but we weren’t sure if mold was actually the problem or if we were overthinking it.
The turning point came during a five-day family vacation. Within a few days of being away from the house, my symptoms disappeared and my wife was sleeping better than she had in months. That made it pretty hard to ignore that something in our home might be affecting us.
When we got back, I started trying to figure out what was going on. I bought air purifiers and DIY mold tests, but quickly realized how difficult it was as a homeowner to get clear, trustworthy information. Eventually, I had a remediation company come out for a “free” inspection. They told me there was likely mold inside the walls and soon afterward sent me a proposal for around $12,000.
I got additional opinions, but one thing kept bothering me: the companies evaluating the problem were often the same companies selling thousands of dollars of remediation work. As a homeowner, I had no real way of knowing what was necessary and what wasn’t.
At the time, our daughter was only nine months old. Looking at her and wondering whether our home could be affecting her made the decision much more personal. Ultimately, we spent more than $20,000 on remediation and nearly another $2,000 on testing to make sure the home was safe afterward.
That experience stayed with me. I started learning everything I could about mold, moisture, sampling, and remediation standards. I eventually became a Certified Mold Inspector through MICRO and founded Guardian Mold Testing.
I built Guardian around the service I wish I’d had when I was going through it myself: an independent company whose job is simply to figure out what’s happening, explain it clearly, and help people make informed decisions. Because we don’t perform remediation, we have no financial incentive to find a bigger problem or sell someone additional work.
What started as a stressful experience for my own family has grown into an opportunity to help homeowners, renters, property managers, and businesses throughout the Santa Barbara and Ventura areas navigate something that can otherwise be incredibly confusing. That independence and clarity are still at the heart of what we do today.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a completely smooth road. One of the biggest challenges has been building a business in an industry where there can be a lot of confusion and fear around mold.
People often call us when they’re already stressed — they may be worried about their health, their children, damage to their home, or the potential cost of remediation. A big part of the job is helping people separate what we actually know from what we don’t know yet, and giving them useful information without unnecessarily alarming them.
Another challenge has been building trust while staying truly independent. We don’t perform remediation, so our business model is very different from companies that can offer an inspection and then sell the work that follows. I strongly believe that independence is valuable, but it also means we have to earn our business one inspection at a time through our reputation, referrals, and the quality of the information we provide.
There has also been a learning curve in growing the company itself. When I started, I was doing nearly everything personally — inspections, reports, scheduling, customer communication, and all of the behind-the-scenes work that comes with running a small business. Over time, I’ve had to build better systems, bring in help, and learn how to grow without losing the personal attention and quality that made the business successful in the first place.
I think those challenges have ultimately made Guardian better. They’ve forced us to be very intentional about how we communicate, how we test, and how we treat people. My goal has never been to make every situation sound like a mold emergency. It’s to give people an honest assessment, explain what the results mean, and help them decide what makes sense from there.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Guardian Mold Testing?
Guardian is an independent mold inspection and testing company serving homeowners, renters, property managers, and businesses throughout the Santa Barbara and Ventura areas. We specialize in identifying potential mold and moisture issues, collecting air and surface samples when appropriate, and helping clients understand what the results actually mean.
What sets us apart is that we do not perform mold remediation. Our only job is to evaluate the property and provide objective information. We have no financial incentive to make a problem seem bigger than it is or to recommend unnecessary work. That independence is a huge part of the company’s identity.
We’re also very focused on making the process understandable. Mold can be an intimidating subject, and people often come to us after reading conflicting information online or receiving very different opinions from different companies. I try to make our reports and conversations practical and straightforward: what did we find, how significant is it, what should be addressed, and what probably doesn’t need to become a major project.
We handle everything from routine residential inspections to more complex moisture investigations, post-remediation verification testing, rental-property concerns, and larger commercial projects. Every property is a little different, so I don’t believe in testing just for the sake of testing. The goal is to collect enough information to answer the client’s questions and help them make a good decision.
What I’m most proud of is the reputation Guardian has built for being thorough without being alarmist. I want people to feel that when they call us, they’re getting someone in their corner who will give them an honest assessment — whether that means identifying a real problem that needs to be addressed or reassuring them that the situation is less serious than they feared.
At the end of the day, Guardian is really about giving people clarity and confidence in a situation that can otherwise feel pretty overwhelming.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
The biggest lesson I’ve learned is that people don’t just need information — they need clarity.
Mold is one of those subjects where it’s very easy to overwhelm someone with technical terms, lab results, worst-case scenarios, and conflicting opinions. Early on, I thought doing a great job meant giving clients as much information as possible. Over time, I realized that the real value is helping them understand what actually matters.
Sometimes that means identifying a serious issue and explaining why it needs attention. Other times, it means telling someone that what we found is relatively minor and they don’t need to turn it into a huge project. Either way, people want an honest answer and a clear path forward.
That lesson has shaped how I run Guardian. I try to approach every inspection by asking, “What does this client actually need to know to make a good decision?” I think that mindset has made me a better inspector, a better business owner, and probably a better communicator in general.
