Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmine Glasheen.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I built my career in a retail content industry that no longer exists. Between 2021 and 2024, I watched content requests shift from mostly human writing with a quick keyword check to business owners asking for quick edits on AI slop. Requests for thought leadership on generational purchasing behavior dried up, and I found myself moonlighting at a hybrid content agency editing LinkedIn profiles for strangers. Going from making six figures and being quoted regularly in Forbes and Bloomberg to getting shot down for jobs that pay less than I used to pay contractors wasn’t exactly the midlife success story I’d envisioned for myself. It was time to make a change.
So, in my late thirties and wielding a brand-spanking-new autism diagnosis, I decided to go back to school for my MFA in Fiction Writing. I’m banking on the idea that while AI can talk in front of a classroom and help students make connections between theories, the concept of being taught by a robot is still too dystopian for it to happen in my lifetime. But I think the shift towards luddite living happening in retail and on social media is the beginning of the high-tech pendulum swinging the other way. We’re telling one another to touch grass again. We’re intentionally setting down our phones for hours at a time. And, after a decade studying next-gen purchasing behavior, I now get to work with young folks in the classroom and hear (quite passionate) retail insights from the belly of the beast. This greatly informs my writing for The Robin Report, where I look at how trends like the modern luddite movement reflect Gen Z’s purchasing ethos, and make suggestions on how retailers can act on that knowledge.
Now in my final year at San Diego State University, I’ve taught Gen Eds, Rhetoric and Writing Studies, and English and Comparative Literature: Introduction to Creative Writing. But it hasn’t all been roses and butterflies: I’m in classes with twenty-somethings, which has been humbling on many levels. It’s come to my attention that I’m no longer cool, for instance, which I’m still processing. The term “millennial humor” (derogatory) was also new to me. But alongside those humbling moments, I’ve anchored in my new identity as a human-first thought leader, educator, and strategist who helps brands cut through the noise of automation to connect with the next generation on their home turf.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t been a smooth road. Balancing my established career in retail thought leadership with my new role as a student lecturer challenged my self-perception, but I’m not alone in this struggle. Many of my close friends and professional connections have also been pressed to find their career footing in this new, AI-driven landscape. The best Marketing Strategist I know was let go this year and is in the process of founding her own agency. The Creative Director at one of my former employers reached out yesterday to say that he had just accepted a full-time valet position at a local country club. But there’s a difference between humility and humiliation; we can choose to take our hits with grace.
We’re products of our times, and those times are ever-changing. All that I—or anyone—can do is show up to the best of my ability for what’s on my plate every single day, whether it’s glamorous or not, and whether folks think we’re cool or not (mostly not, in my case). Staying true to my passion for cultivating authentic thought leadership led me to pursue college lecturing. That working with next-gens daily better positions me to strategically advise retail clients and informs my writing is a wonderful advantage.
We’ve been impressed with Jasmine Glasheen & Associates, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I help business owners and brands reach customers through retail content services, strategic storytelling, consulting, and targeted presentations. My neurodivergence gives me a unique ability to spot patterns, consumer shifts, and industry blind spots that others miss. That perspective has made me a sought-after partner for major brands and institutions like IBM, Perry Ellis International, Sourcing Journal, and The Ohio State University.
Alongside my content practice, I teach college courses in English, Comparative Literature, Rhetoric, and Retail Strategy while I complete my MFA at San Diego State University (graduating May 2027). This dual focus allows me to bridge the gap between academic research and grassroots commercial execution.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
I tend to draw inspiration from writers who obsessively observe human behavior with a comedic bent. I’ve been diving deep into Russian literature like Dostoevsky. Through a neurodivergent lens, his work reads less like heavy tragedy and more like sharp, dark satire on social posturing. Podcast-wise, “The History of Literature” with Jackie Wilson is incredible for listeners like me who want to hear about the social and personal factors behind novels while studying the work itself.
I believe great content starts with human observation, and I don’t limit my reading to traditional academic tomes. On the essay and humor side, David Sedaris, Patricia Lockwood, Augusten Burroughs, and Samantha Irby are permanent fixtures on my Kindle. I admire how they zoom in on the absurdity of micro-interactions and their mastery of voice–content strategy and brand positioning require a similar skill set.
