Exploring Life & Business with Katie Smith of K Smith Interiors

Today we’d like to introduce you to Katie Smith.

Hi Katie, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My journey has been anything but a straight line, but when I look back, there’s one common thread: I’ve always been passionate about helping people create a life they love at home.
I’ve always been drawn to design, but what really captured my attention wasn’t just how a space looked—it was how it made people feel. Over time, I began to notice that when someone’s home truly supports their lifestyle, everything feels easier. People are more relaxed, more connected, and more able to enjoy their everyday lives.
As I worked with more clients, I realized many people weren’t struggling because they lacked good taste; they were struggling because they didn’t know how to bring all the pieces together in a way that worked for them. I saw an opportunity to guide them through that process and help them create homes that were both beautiful and deeply functional.
That realization shaped the way I approach design today. I developed a process that allows me to really understand my clients—their routines, priorities, challenges, and dreams for their homes. My goal is never to design for a photograph or a trend. It’s to create a space that feels authentic to the people living there and supports the life they want to build.
Today, I feel incredibly fortunate to do work that combines creativity, problem-solving, and human connection. Every project is a chance to help someone transform not just their space, but their daily experience of living in it. That’s what continues to inspire me and what has brought me to where I am today—a designer who believes that good design creates good living.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My journey certainly hasn’t been a smooth road. It’s been an adventure filled with detours, dead ends, and more than a few opportunities to pave my own path. That’s part of what has shaped me as both a designer and a business owner.
I genuinely believe I have one of the best jobs in the world. I get to help people create homes that improve their daily lives, support their families, and reflect who they are. But it’s also one of the most challenging professions because so much of what we do is built on trust.
My clients are inviting me into one of the most personal and significant investments they’ll ever make—their home. They’re trusting me to guide decisions that affect not only their finances but also how they live every day. Building that trust takes time, and I’ve learned that a large part of my job isn’t just designing beautiful spaces; it’s helping clients understand the reasoning behind the solutions I’m recommending.
As designers, we often see challenges and opportunities that clients may not even realize exist. Every recommendation I make has a purpose behind it. It’s not about following trends or spending money unnecessarily—it’s about creating a home that functions better, feels better, and ultimately improves their quality of life.
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that the success of a project depends on collaboration and trust. When clients hire a professional but struggle to trust the process, I spend a lot of time thoughtfully explaining my concerns and the long-term impact of certain decisions. Sometimes I joke that I spend as much time communicating and educating as I do designing.
Over the years, I’ve learned to approach those conversations with patience, grace, and empathy. My goal is never to convince someone they’re wrong; it’s to help them see possibilities they may not have considered. When that trust is established, the results are incredible. The design is stronger, the process is more enjoyable, and clients end up with a home that truly supports the life they want to live.
That’s been the biggest part of my journey—learning that great design isn’t just about creativity. It’s about leadership, communication, trust, and guiding people toward solutions that serve them long after the project is complete.

We’ve been impressed with K Smith Interiors, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
K Smith Interiors is built on a simple belief: great design creates good living. That’s more than a tagline for me—it’s the foundation of everything I do.
What I want people to know is that I’m not just designing beautiful rooms. I’m designing solutions that support the way my clients live every day. Whether it’s a kitchen remodel, a full-home renovation, new construction, or simply refreshing a space, my goal is always the same: to create a home that functions beautifully and feels authentically theirs.
One of the things that sets my business apart is my Design-Flow Method. Over years of experience, I developed a step-by-step process that guides clients from the initial dream phase all the way through implementation. Interior design can feel overwhelming for homeowners, so I’ve created a process that brings clarity, confidence, and structure to what can otherwise be a stressful experience.
I think what I’m most known for is my ability to see beyond what a client is asking for and uncover what they actually need. Often, clients come to me focused on colors, furniture, or finishes, but my real work starts by understanding how they live. How do they move through their home? What frustrates them? What would make their daily routines easier and more enjoyable? Those answers lead to design decisions that are not only beautiful but also highly functional and deeply personal.
What I’m most proud of, brand-wise, is that I’ve built a business centered on service, trust, and education. I don’t believe design should be intimidating. I want my clients to feel heard, supported, and empowered throughout the process. I spend a lot of time helping them understand the “why” behind my recommendations because every design choice has a purpose. When clients trust the process, the results are transformative.
At the end of the day, I want people to know that K Smith Interiors isn’t about creating magazine-worthy rooms. It’s about creating homes that improve quality of life. If I’ve done my job well, my clients don’t just end up with a beautiful space—they end up living better in it. And that’s what makes me most proud of the work I do.

Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
I’m always chasing inspiration, and I’ve learned that some of the best creative resources aren’t necessarily design books or industry publications.
Music has always been one of my biggest sources of inspiration. I love how a song can instantly create a mood, shift your perspective, or evoke an emotion. As a designer, I’m constantly thinking about how a space feels, and music reminds me that atmosphere and emotion are just as important as aesthetics.
I’m also pretty old school when it comes to inspiration. I still love flipping through fashion magazines like Vogue, W, and other editorial publications. Fashion has always been ahead of the curve when it comes to color trends, textures, and storytelling. What fascinates me most is how an editorial photo spread can tell an entire story and create a mood within just a few pages. That ability to communicate emotion through visuals translates directly into the way I approach interior design.
Beyond magazines and music, nature is one of my greatest teachers. I love starting the day with a slow walk on the beach. There’s something incredibly inspiring about observing the natural harmony of colors, textures, light, and movement. Nature never gets it wrong. Whether it’s the soft layers of sand and sea, the changing colors of the sky, or the weathered textures found along the shoreline, there are endless lessons in balance and beauty.
At the end of the day, I find inspiration everywhere. The most meaningful ideas often come from experiences rather than design resources. Staying curious, paying attention, and being present in the world around me is what helps me bring fresh ideas and thoughtful solutions to my clients.
