Exploring Life & Business with Louis Devas of BackdropSource

Today we’d like to introduce you to Louis Devas.

Hi Louis, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I still remember where it all started. 2004. Two people, one sewing machine, a small space, and a genuine desire to build something worth building. We weren’t chasing some big business dream back then. We just believed photographers deserved backdrops that matched the quality of their craft.
Those first orders? We treated every single one like it was the most important job we’d ever taken on. Because at that point, it was. We’d fulfil it, learn from it, get a little better, and do it again. That was the whole playbook in the beginning.
By 2010, we had a team of 50. Things were moving. There was real energy in the room. And then the ground shifted beneath us.
The rise of Google, Amazon, digital advertising — it didn’t just change the game; it changed the entire field. And the hardest part wasn’t the competition. It was the visibility. Internet neutrality was a term people talked about, but it wasn’t something anyone was actually practicing. If you had money, you got seen. If you had a great product but not the budget to push it, you got buried. We were in the business of making quality things — but quality alone wasn’t enough to get you in front of the right people anymore. That stung. And it made those years genuinely difficult to navigate.
But looking back, I’m grateful for them because that taught me so much.
Those years stripped away everything that wasn’t working and forced us to get real about what we were actually good at — and where the market was genuinely headed. In 2018, we found our footing in fabric display solutions. And everything started to click.
We’d launched our Shopify store back in 2015, so the infrastructure was already there. But 2018 gave us something more valuable than a platform — it gave us clarity. We knew what we were building, who we were building it for, and what standard we refused to fall below. Premium quality. Honest pricing. Real service. No shortcuts.
From that point, the growth felt different. Less reactive, more intentional. We kept developing new products the right way — by listening to our customers, understanding what they actually needed, and delivering on that promise every time.
Today, we’re a team of 100, proudly serving photographers, event planners, brands, and creators right across the US and globally. And I’ll be honest — that number still gets me. Because I can still picture what it looked like when it was just two of us trying to figure it out in a small room.
Twenty-two years in, here’s what I know for certain: every decade brings a technology that changes everything. Back then it was Google and Amazon. Now it’s AI. And just like before, we’re not pretending we have all the answers. We’re showing up, paying attention, and doing the work of understanding what it means for our customers and our craft. Every single day we learn something new. And honestly, I think that’s the whole secret — the moment you think you’ve figured it out is the moment you start falling behind. We’d rather stay curious. We’d rather keep growing. Because that’s the only way we know how to truly serve the people who trust us with their work.
We’re still learning. And we always will be.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
What We Do and Why It Matters
BackdropSource is a custom backdrop and display solutions company. We design, print, and deliver everything from photography backdrops and media walls to tradeshow booths, SEG fabric displays, photobooths, and lightboxes. If a brand, photographer, event planner, or creative professional needs a visual presence that stops people in their tracks, that’s where we come in. We help people show up looking their absolute best.

What We Specialize In
We specialize in custom. That word gets used a lot in this industry, but we mean it in the truest sense. Every product we make is built around what the customer actually needs — their brand colors, their event vision, their space, their story. We don’t do one-size-fits-all. We never have.
Over the years, we’ve developed deep expertise in fabric-based display solutions — particularly SEG displays and high-quality fabric printing — because we believe fabric is simply the superior medium. It travels well, it photographs beautifully, and it carries print detail in a way that other materials just can’t match.

What Sets Us Apart
Twenty years. That’s not a number we throw around lightly. Two decades of understanding what works, what doesn’t, what clients actually need versus what they think they need, and how to deliver under pressure without compromising on quality.
A few things we hear consistently from our customers that we’re genuinely proud of:
We’re reachable. Our support team is available 24/7 — not a chatbot, not a ticketing queue that takes three days to respond. Real people who know the products and care about the outcome.
We don’t rush the design process. We offer mockup revisions because we’d rather get it right than get it out the door fast. The print is only as good as the artwork behind it, and we take that seriously.
And our pricing is honest. We serve small studios and global brands — and we believe both deserve access to premium quality without being priced out of it.

What We’re Most Proud Of
Honestly? The range of people who trust us. A photographer setting up her first home studio. A startup company building out their tradeshow presence. A wedding planner creating a backdrop for someone’s most important day. An event coordinator putting together a media wall for a red carpet premiere.
The diversity of who we serve is something we wear with real pride. It tells us that quality and value aren’t mutually exclusive — and that when you get that balance right, it resonates across every market and every budget.
We’re also proud of how far we’ve come geographically. What started as a small operation has grown into a brand that serves customers across the US, Australia, the UK, the UAE, Canada, and beyond. That kind of global trust isn’t built overnight. It’s built order by order, relationship by relationship.

What We Want Readers To Know
We’re not the loudest brand in the room. We don’t chase trends for the sake of it. What we do is show up — consistently, carefully, and with a genuine commitment to making sure every customer gets something they’re proud to put their name next to.
If you’ve ever felt let down by a display product that looked great in a photo but fell apart in person — we built BackdropSource for you. If you’ve ever needed support at 11 pm the night before a big event — we built it for you. If you’ve ever wanted something truly custom but assumed the price tag was out of reach — we built it for you too.
Twenty two years in, that mission hasn’t changed. And neither has our standard.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
A business is only as good as the people behind it, and I’ve been fortunate to have genuinely great ones.
Every milestone we’ve hit, every hard season we’ve navigated, every customer we’ve kept coming back — that’s been a shared effort. I set the direction, but the team is what moves things forward. That balance matters, and I’ve never lost sight of it.
I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve built together. And I mean that.
