Hi Paul, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Knox began the way the best schools do, with a founder’s love and dedication to embodying the change she wanted to see in the world. In 2012, Dr. Angela Tanner founded The Knox School of Santa Barbara for curious, bright children who learn best when someone truly sees them. She opened the doors for the first time in 2013 with a simple conviction that a child’s curiosity is a gift to nurture, never a trait to manage.
I joined as the Head of School in 2025, a fourth-generation educator drawn to Santa Barbara by that same conviction. My path ran through two schools built for exactly this kind of learner, and the moment I met Knox families I recognized something rare, a community that leads with connection and lets every child grow into the fullest version of themselves. Continuing that story is the honor of my career.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Any school that grows from five students into the community we are today meets real challenges along the way, and we have welcomed every one of them. Growth like that asks you to stay devoted to your founding mission while adding the right elements at the right moments, never faster than you can do well. So we hold to a simple discipline: grow sustainably, protect the core DNA that makes Knox Knox, and stay responsive to a fast-changing world and educational landscape. Adaptive, grounded, sustaining, and bold, in equal measure.
These seasons of change have confirmed what we already believed. When you know every child by name, you can meet any moment. We have grown and evolved in the years since, and each chapter has sharpened the same commitment, to serve every family personally and to keep the joy of learning at the center of childhood.

Knox is an independent school in Santa Barbara, serving kindergarten through eighth grade, built on a belief that education should fit the child rather than the other way around. We specialize in individualized learning. Our purpose-built program pairs small classes where teachers truly know each student with a curriculum that meets each child exactly where they are and propels them as far as their curiosity will go.
What sets us apart is the feeling in the room. Kindness is the culture here, not competition. Children are known, challenged, and genuinely delighted in. We are proudest of what our families tell us again and again, that at Knox their child finally feels understood and free to become fully themselves. And they do it while building real self-confidence and a clear sense of who they are as a learner, the foundation for a lifelong love of learning and a commitment to excellence. That is the whole promise, and we keep it one child at a time.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
The real risk in education is playing it safe. It is easy to run the standard playbook and produce standard results. Choosing to build a school around each individual child is the braver path, and it is the one Knox has always taken.
For a family, choosing us can feel like a leap too. Trusting a school to see your child differently, to prize depth over speed and curiosity over conformity, takes courage, dedication, and commitment to partnership on the part of our families as much as the school. Our job is to honor that courage every single day. So, yes, I believe in thoughtful risk, the kind rooted in conviction rather than fear. The families who thrive here tend to feel the same way, and watching their children flourish is proof that the bold choice was the right one.
