Exploring Life & Business with Sue Saign of Saign Law, PC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sue Saign.

Hi Sue, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I became a business owner by accident. I went to law school while being a single mom in hopes of finding a career that would provide stability for my family. My undergraduate degree was in cultural anthropology, but I could not find a job in that field. I decided that if I went back to school for a post-graduate degree, then I needed to pick a field that would allow me to get a job. That is why I chose law school. I did 4 years of night law school, while working and raising my young son. I graduated when my son was in kindergarten. He is 17 years old now. I opened my law practice right out of law school out of necessity and inability to find a job. I began doing family law because the other attorney in the building I practiced in began giving me cases. (He was older and about to retire.) I enjoyed family law because it dealt with real human life situations and children. Being a single mom I understood that. I enjoyed helping people. Over time, my office grew and, at one point, I was managing 3 other attorneys. That became extremely stressful because it meant I had to work almost 4 times as hard and I decided to pull back. Today, I manage a busy practice, but do not have other attorneys working for me.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The business has always done well as far as generating income. Learning how to let go of perfectionism and learning how to manage employees has been my biggest struggle and I am still working on that today. When people think of a successful business, I think that many think of size – like the business growing in employees and taking on more clients. For me, success meant being able to be more than just a business owner, being able to spend time enjoying the life that the business afforded me, being able to be there for my family, and learning about my limitations and boundaries.

As you know, we’re big fans of Saign Law, PC. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I practice family law. My passion is custody because, as a mother, I love to help and protect children from adult conflict and from detriment. It is a very interesting area of law that incorporates a lot of psychology, sociology, and understanding of relational dynamics. I am proud of being known for being responsive and assertive. I am not an attorney that is going to go along with things just for the sake of peace. Sometimes you have to speak up and fight for what is right, even when that is hard, and I am willing to do that.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
organization, responsibility, and a strong work ethic
