Today we’d like to introduce you to Liliana & Mikael.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Our journey started over a decade ago. We both were working across a wide variety of industries, from small businesses to large corporations… and kept noticing the exact same, frustrating gap.
So many business owners were struggling with bookkeepers and CPAs who felt completely disconnected from their daily operations. They were paying sky-high rates, getting next to no communication, and receiving zero financial literacy training. It felt like these financial professionals cared more about the money in their own pockets than the success of the companies they were supposed to be supporting.
We knew there had to be a better, more human way to do things. That’s why we started Salt & Ledger.
We set out to bridge that gap by becoming a true extension of our clients’ teams. Today, we focus heavily on communication, education, and relationship-building. While we intentionally keep our services accessible rather than charging those inflated industry premiums, the payoff for us is watching our clients get the support system they need to truly thrive and perfect their craft.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Oh, absolutely not! It has definitely not been a smooth road. Anyone who says starting a business is easy must have a secret formula I did not get!
In the early days, we hit some hilarious – well, painful at the time, but funny now – administrative brick walls. First of all, we registered the business in one city and then decided to move our office to another city shortly after. Let me tell you, the sheer amount of tedious, mind boggling red tape involved in just changing jurisdictions was enough to make my hair turn gray.
Right on the heels of that, we hit a massive roadblock with licensing. We ran into requirements we had absolutely no idea even existed, and it completely halted our momentum, setting us back a couple of months right when we were trying to get off the ground. It was incredibly frustrating.
But looking back, that headache was actually a blessing in disguise. Going through that nightmare made us realize: “If this is this confusing for us as financial professionals, how on earth is a creative, a contractor, or a restaurant owner supposed to navigate this?”
That frustrating setback is exactly why we created our services for new business setup. We realized we had to master the rules for our own industry, city, and state, so we decided to keep going and master them for every industry and location. Today, we handle that entire confusing setup process so new business owners, no matter how big or small, do not have to lose months of sleep like we did. Out of our biggest headache came one of our favorite ways to help people!
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
At Salt & Ledger, we like to say we are the bookkeeping team you actually look forward to talking to. We are a relationship-first bookkeeping and financial services firm, but more than that, we are an active extension of our clients’ teams.
We specialize first and foremost in bookkeeping, payroll, taxes, and new business setup. These four core pillars are where we spend most of our time helping clients find their footing and stay on track. However, our expertise does not stop there. We are just as passionate and well-versed in a full suite of other critical financial services. Most recently, we have expanded our offerings to provide dedicated fiduciary bookkeeping for trusts and estates; helping trustees, executors, and families navigate complex assets, cleanups, and court-ready reporting with absolute precision.
Our suite also includes customized training programs, fractional CFO services for businesses ready to scale, and bookkeeping software selection and setup to make sure your digital foundation is seamless. Every service we offer is designed to give you complete financial peace of mind.
While we handle all of these complex numbers, we are best known for our focus on financial literacy. We do not just hand you a spreadsheet at the end of the month and send a high bill. We sit down with you, translate those numbers into plain English, and teach you how to read your financials so you can make confident, empowered decisions for your business.
What truly sets us apart is our heart and our pricing philosophy. The financial industry is notorious for high rates, poor communication, and zero personal connection. We chose a different path. We intentionally keep our services accessible because we care about building a lasting support system over squeezing every dollar out of a transaction. If you work with us, you are getting a partner who is just as invested in your business thriving as you are.
Brand wise, we are incredibly proud of how we have turned our own early business struggles into a lifeline for others. After battling our own confusing, tedious road with local business licenses and jurisdiction changes, we decided to master that complex system. Now, our specialized new business setup services help entrepreneurs in any industry, city, or state launch their dreams smoothly, without the months of headache we went through.
If there is one thing we want your readers to know, it is that you do not have to navigate your business finances alone. Whether you are just starting out with a big idea or you are an established business looking for a team that genuinely cares, Salt & Ledger is here to help you perfect your craft and build a foundation for long term success.
How do you think about happiness?
On a personal level, what makes us happiest is witnessing the exact moment the heavy weight of financial stress lifts off a business owner’s shoulders.
When clients first come to us, they are often incredibly overwhelmed. They might be drowning in receipts, terrified of tax season, or feeling completely lost after trying to navigate confusing business licenses on their own. You can practically feel their anxiety when they talk about their numbers.
Our absolute favorite part of this work is watching that anxiety melt away. It is that moment during our monthly meetings when a client looks at their dashboard and says, ‘Oh, I actually understand this now.’ It is hearing the relief in their voice when they realize their payroll is running smoothly, their taxes are fully handled, and they finally have the freedom to focus entirely on what they love doing.
Why does that make us so happy? Because small businesses are the heartbeat of our communities. The people running them are incredibly talented creatives, builders, and service providers, but they did not start their businesses to become full time accountants. Giving them their time, peace of mind, and confidence back is the most rewarding feeling in the world. Knowing that we played a small part in helping someone’s dream succeed is exactly why we do what we do.
