Today we’d like to introduce you to Hayley Hall.
Hi Hayley, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started riding at StarCycle Santa Barbara in 2019, right before COVID. At the time, I was simply looking for something fun that would help me start my own fitness journey. I had no idea that walking into that studio would eventually change the entire direction of my life.
After two years of riding as a member, I decided to audition to become an instructor. By then, I had experienced firsthand how powerful movement could be, not just physically, but mentally. I wanted to be the person who could bring a little bit of positivity into someone’s day, remind them of how strong they are, and create a space where they could walk out feeling better than when they walked in.
Three years into teaching, the previous owners approached my husband and me about purchasing the studio. They were ready to pass it on to a new generation, and suddenly this place that had played such a huge role in my own journey had the opportunity to become ours.
We were terrified. It was a huge leap, and there were so many unknowns. But underneath all of that fear was this overwhelming feeling that we had to take the chance. We could see what the studio could become, and we knew how much we cared about the people inside of it.
In March of 2025, we officially became the owners of StarCycle Santa Barbara, and since then, we’ve poured so much of ourselves into creating the kind of space we believe fitness should be.
We’ve worked to build a truly inclusive environment where every fitness level feels welcome and where you never have to look or move a certain way to belong. We’ve expanded what we offer beyond indoor cycling with strength and sculpt classes, put a huge focus on onsite childcare so parents have a space for themselves too, and, most importantly, built a community that genuinely shows up for one another.
When I look at the studio today, it feels completely different from the one we purchased and I mean that in the best possible way. It has become a reflection of everything we care about: inclusivity, strength, connection, and community.
There’s something really emotional about knowing that I once walked through those doors as someone just trying to find a way to enjoy working out, and now I get to help create that feeling for someone else. I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve built, but even more proud of the people who have built it alongside us. StarCycle Santa Barbara has become so much more than a fitness studio to me. It’s a community, and it’s a huge part of my story.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Haha, no! I don’t think anyone who owns a small business can say it’s always a smooth road. Taking over an existing business came with its own unique challenges because we weren’t starting from scratch we were stepping into something that already had a history, a community, and expectations.
Change can be hard, and in the beginning, we really had to prove to our community that we had what it took. We had to take a step back and evaluate the studio as a whole and ask ourselves, “What do we want this place to feel like? What do we want people to experience when they walk through our doors?”
There were definitely growing pains. We made changes, tried new things, learned what worked and what didn’t, and had moments where we questioned whether we were making the right decisions. One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that you can’t make every single person happy, especially when you’re trying to grow and evolve a business. You have to stay grounded in why you started and trust the vision you have for it.
For us, that vision has always been to create a place where everyone feels like they belong. We wanted to build more than a place to work out we wanted a community where people feel seen, supported, and excited to walk through the doors.
There have absolutely been bumps along the way, and I’m sure there will be plenty more, but I think those challenges have made us better owners. Every hard decision, mistake, and growing pain has helped shape the studio into what it is today, and I’m really proud that we stayed true to what we believed it could become.
We’ve been impressed with Starcycle Santa Barbara , but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
StarCycle Santa Barbara is so much more than an indoor cycling studio, and I think that’s what I’m most proud of. We’ve worked really hard to create a place where movement feels welcoming, fun, and accessible whether you’ve been working out for years or you’re walking into a fitness studio for the very first time.
While indoor cycling is at the heart of what we do, we’ve expanded our offerings to include strength-focused rides as well as sculpt classes that combine time on the bike with strength training off the bike using weights and resistance bands. We wanted our members to be able to get different types of movement and build strength without needing memberships at multiple studios.
One of the things that really sets us apart is our onsite childcare, StarKids. As a mom myself, I understand how difficult it can be to prioritize yourself when you have a little one. I’m incredibly proud that we can give parents a place where their children are cared for while they get 45 minutes to do something for themselves. To me, that is about so much more than a workout.
But if you asked me what we’re most known for, I hope the answer would be our community. We truly believe that everybody and every body belongs in our studio. You don’t have to look a certain way, be at a certain fitness level, or know what you’re doing before you walk through our doors. Our job is to meet you where you are, celebrate you for showing up, and help you discover how strong you already are.
I think what I’m most proud of brand-wise is that we’re creating the kind of fitness space I wish everyone could experience a place where you can challenge yourself without feeling judged, where instructors know your name, where friendships are formed, and where people genuinely notice when you haven’t been there in a while.
At the end of the day, we offer really great workouts, but the workout is what gets people through the door. The way they feel when they’re here is what keeps them coming back. And that’s what I’m most proud of.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
I think the fitness industry is moving toward a more holistic approach. People are looking for more than just a workout they want strength, variety, community, and something that fits into their real life.
I think we’ll continue to see more studios offering a mix of cardio, strength, sculpt, and recovery, along with more focus on accessibility. For us, that includes things like onsite childcare, which can remove a huge barrier for parents.
More than anything, I think community will matter even more. The workout is important, but people want to feel supported, connected, and like they truly belong.
