Today we’d like to introduce you to Winston Bodkin.
Hi Winston, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My story with CASITA really started by seeing the same problem over and over again. Homeowners wanted to build ADUs, but the process was often confusing and fragmented. They were dealing with designers, engineers, permitting departments, contractors and consultants, yet there was rarely one team looking at the entire project from the homeowner’s perspective. That stood out to me because these are major investments, and people were being asked to make big decisions without always having clear information about cost, scope, timing or who was truly representing their interests. That became the starting point for CASITA and for the idea that there had to be a better way to guide homeowners through the process. But what CASITA has become today is very much the result of the team around me. We’ve challenged ideas, learned from real projects, improved the process and continued to ask how we can make the experience better for homeowners. Together, we built a model that takes a project from feasibility and design through permitting, competitive bidding and construction management without becoming another traditional contractor. Over time, that approach became what we now call The CASITA Way. Today, we’re continuing to grow, but the goal remains the same: create a more transparent, coordinated and homeowner-focused way to design, bid and build an ADU.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely has not been a smooth road, and I think that is true for most businesses that are trying to build something different. One of the biggest challenges has been operating in an industry where every project can bring a new set of variables. Different jurisdictions, permitting requirements, site conditions, budgets, consultants and contractors can all change the direction of a project very quickly. Another challenge has been building a process that gives homeowners more clarity in an industry that is not always very transparent. That takes a lot of coordination, communication and sometimes difficult conversations. We have also had to learn how to grow without losing the level of involvement and care that helped build CASITA in the first place. Some of our best improvements came from projects that did not go exactly as planned. Instead of ignoring those moments, our team has tried to learn from them, adjust the process and make the next project better. I think that has been one of the most important parts of our growth. The challenges have shaped CASITA just as much as the successes have, and they are a big reason The CASITA Way continues to evolve.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
CASITA ADU is an ADU-focused construction management agency built around one simple idea: homeowners should have more clarity, more choices and better representation throughout the entire process. We help manage a project from feasibility and design through permitting, competitive bidding, builder selection and construction management. What makes our model different is that we are not approaching the project as the contractor trying to win the construction work. Our role is to help the homeowner understand the project, establish realistic expectations early, compare qualified builders and make informed decisions before construction begins. We also provide cost guidance from the beginning, because we believe homeowners should understand the financial picture as early as possible rather than discovering it after months of design and permitting. Over time, our team has developed this into what we call The CASITA Way a more coordinated, transparent and homeowner-focused way to design, bid and build an ADU. What I am most proud of is not a particular project or marketing campaign; it is the process our team has built and continues to improve. CASITA has grown by listening to homeowners, learning from challenges and being willing to change things when we believe there is a better way. I want readers to understand that CASITA is not simply about building more ADUs. We are trying to improve the experience homeowners have when making one of the largest investments they may make in their property.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
I define success as building something that creates real value for people and continues to get better over time. Of course, growth and financial performance matter because a business has to be healthy to survive, but I do not think those things tell the whole story. For me, success is when a homeowner feels informed, supported and confident in the decisions they made throughout their project. It is also seeing our team grow, take ownership, improve the process and help shape what CASITA is becoming. I am proud when the company can create opportunities for the people around us while also raising the standard for the way homeowners experience the ADU process. If we can continue to grow without losing the trust, transparency and level of care that got us here, I would consider that success.
