Life & Work with Judy Armstrong of Central Coast (California)

Today we’d like to introduce you to Judy Armstrong.

Hi Judy, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My journey has been anything but linear. At 36, I was diagnosed with lupus and spent nearly a decade barely able to work. During that season, I learned more about perseverance than I ever expected. A simple act of compassion—a barber who stopped and prayed for me—became a turning point in my life. Within a year, my lupus went into remission, and that experience forever shaped how I view faith, resilience, and purpose.

From there, I built a career in healthcare leadership, eventually serving as a CEO for nearly eleven years. I was passionate about leading teams, serving others, and helping organizations grow. Later in life, after two leg surgeries, I found myself reinventing my career once again. Rather than seeing it as the end of one chapter, I chose to see it as the beginning of another.

Today, I speak about resilience, leadership, reinvention, and faith—sharing the lessons I’ve learned through both success and adversity. My story isn’t just about overcoming obstacles; it’s about discovering that some of life’s greatest challenges can become the foundation for your greatest purpose. I hope that when people hear my story, they leave believing that no matter what chapter they’re in, there’s still meaningful work ahead and hope for what’s next.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, it definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Some of my greatest growth has come through life’s hardest seasons. Being diagnosed with lupus at 36 changed everything. For nearly ten years, I struggled with debilitating symptoms that made it difficult to work or even imagine what my future would look like. It was a season filled with uncertainty, frustration, and learning to trust that there was still purpose in the midst of adversity.

Later, after building a successful career in healthcare leadership and serving as a CEO for nearly eleven years, I faced another unexpected challenge when I underwent two leg surgeries. Once again, I found myself having to adapt, redefine my path, and embrace change instead of resisting it.

I’ve also learned that leadership itself comes with challenges—making difficult decisions, navigating organizational change, and carrying the responsibility of serving employees, patients, and communities. Those experiences taught me resilience, humility, and the importance of leading with compassion.

Looking back, I wouldn’t say the obstacles were detours; they became part of the journey. Each challenge strengthened my faith, shaped my perspective, and prepared me for the work I do today as a speaker and author. My message is rooted in lived experience: setbacks don’t have to define you—they can become the very experiences that equip you to help others.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Today, I serve as a keynote speaker, author, executive coach, and leadership consultant. I specialize in helping individuals and organizations build resilience, lead through change, and discover purpose in the face of adversity. Drawing from my own experiences as a healthcare CEO, lupus survivor, and someone who has had to reinvent my career more than once, I share practical leadership insights that are grounded in real life—not just theory.

I’m probably best known for speaking on resilience and reinvention. My audiences appreciate that I don’t just talk about overcoming challenges; I’ve lived them. Whether I’m speaking to healthcare professionals, business leaders, women’s organizations, or faith-based audiences, my goal is to inspire people with practical strategies they can apply immediately in both their personal and professional lives.

What I’m most proud of isn’t a title or position—it’s the impact I’ve been able to have on people’s lives. Throughout my years in healthcare leadership, I had the privilege of building strong teams and serving communities. Today, I find that same fulfillment in encouraging others to persevere through difficult seasons and realize they’re capable of far more than they may believe.

What sets me apart is authenticity. I don’t speak from a place of perfection; I speak from experience. My leadership lessons were forged through illness, recovery, executive leadership, personal setbacks, and faith. That combination allows me to connect with people in a genuine way and offer hope that resilience isn’t something you’re born with—it’s something you develop through life’s challenges. If my story helps someone find the courage to keep going or to embrace a new chapter with confidence, then I know I’ve fulfilled my purpose.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
If I could offer one piece of advice, it would be this: don’t be afraid to embrace the unexpected. Very few careers unfold exactly as we plan, and some of the opportunities that shape us the most come from challenges we never would have chosen. Your setbacks don’t disqualify you—they often prepare you for your greatest purpose.

I also wish I had understood earlier that resilience is built one decision at a time. You don’t develop strength when life is easy; you develop it by continuing to move forward when life is difficult. Be willing to learn, adapt, and grow, even when the path changes.

Invest in relationships and never underestimate the value of integrity. Skills and experience matter, but people remember how you treated them. Lead with compassion, stay curious, and never stop learning. Every person you meet has something to teach you.

Finally, don’t compare your journey to anyone else’s. Success isn’t about reaching someone else’s definition of achievement—it’s about using your unique gifts to make a meaningful difference. Stay true to your values, trust the process, and remember that every chapter, even the difficult ones, has the potential to shape the leader and person you’re becoming.
