Meet Abbie Coe of Abbie Coe Astro

Today we’d like to introduce you to Abbie Coe.

Abbie, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I was born in Birmingham, Alabama, and grew up in Dothan, a small town in southeast Alabama. I attended Auburn University, where I earned my bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Sciences, and after college I spent several years working in medical device sales. At the time, I thought I was on a fairly traditional career path, but as I approached my late twenties, I began questioning whether the work I was doing felt truly meaningful and aligned with who I was becoming.

That period became the beginning of a much deeper journey of self-discovery for me. Looking back now as an astrologer, I find it interesting that it coincided with my Saturn return, although I knew very little about astrology at the time. I began doing a great deal of personal inner work through therapy, group work, and spiritual mentorship, and became increasingly interested in psychology, spirituality, healing, and developing a deeper understanding of myself. During the years I lived in Chattanooga, Tennessee, I also completed a 200-hour yoga teacher training and Reiki Levels I & II. Through my own experiences of being supported and witnessed during that time, I began to feel called toward work where I could offer something similar to others.

I had always wanted to pursue a master’s degree, but I intentionally waited until I knew I had found something I genuinely wanted to study. In 2014, that led me across the country to Sonoma, California, where I entered a small, two-year Master’s program in Depth Psychology at Sonoma State University. Our cohort consisted of only eleven people, and the program became another profound period of personal exploration as well as academic study.

Much of our work was influenced by Carl Jung and explored the psyche through archetypes, symbolism, shadow and persona, somatic experience, creativity, nature, and alchemy. We weren’t simply learning psychological theories intellectually; we were often experiencing and exploring them through ourselves and within the container of our cohort. My graduate research eventually focused on phototherapy and therapeutic photography and the ways photography, nature, creativity, symbolism, and our relationship with images can become tools for self-reflection and healing.

After leaving Sonoma, I eventually moved to Asheville, North Carolina. I was still completing my thesis while working in the wine industry, and 2018 became a particularly transitional and challenging year in my life. During that time, I was introduced to astrocartography, which led me to have my first in-depth natal chart readings. I was fascinated by how accurately the chart seemed to reflect different dimensions of my personality and experiences, but what especially captured me was discovering that astrology could speak to our growth and evolution as well. Learning about my North Node and its symbolism around life direction and development opened an entirely new world for me.

From there, I became somewhat insatiably curious about astrology. I started reading everything I could find, studying my own chart, and eventually realized that astrology could integrate beautifully with the psychological work I had already spent years studying. I specifically began searching for a program that combined psychology and astrology, which led me to Debra Silverman’s Applied Astrology program. Because Debra is both a psychotherapist and astrologer, her approach offered the psycho-spiritual and therapeutic orientation I had been looking for. I completed Levels I & II of Applied Astrology in 2019, which became the foundation of the way I learned to work with clients and interpret the birth chart through a compassionate and empowering lens.

That same year, I found my way back to California. I had driven through San Luis Obispo during an earlier cross-country trip and remember thinking, I could really see myself living here. I loved the beauty of the area, and knowing there was also a wine region here gave me a practical way to make the move. In August of 2019, I relocated to the Central Coast and began working at a winery in Paso Robles while continuing to deepen my study and practice of astrology.

When the pandemic arrived in 2020 and I was eventually laid off from the wine industry, I suddenly had more space to devote to finishing my graduate work and continuing my astrological studies. During that period, I practiced by reading charts for roommates and friends while continuing to learn through books, podcasts, and ongoing study. In the summer of 2021, I completed my thesis and officially received my Master’s degree in Depth Psychology.

By early 2022, I was also studying life and purpose coaching through the Life Purpose Institute when a friend from my training invited me to be the astrologer at a women’s healing retreat in Ojai. That became my first paid event offering astrology readings, and it felt like a natural culmination of so many different threads of my life finally coming together.

I officially launched my astrology and empowerment coaching business that year and began offering individual readings on the Central Coast, including working for a period of time out of a shop in Morro Bay. From there, my work continued to evolve through private natal chart readings, Astro-Empowerment Coaching, lunar-cycle classes, New and Full Moon gatherings, retreats, and collaborative workshops weaving astrology together with practices such as tarot, essential oils, ritual, and vision boarding.

Looking back, my path hasn’t been particularly linear, but I can see a thread running through all of it. What began as my own search to better understand myself eventually led me toward Depth Psychology, symbolism and archetypes, astrology, and coaching. Today, I feel grateful to bring those different pieces together in work that helps others deepen their own self-understanding, reconnect with their inner knowing, and move through their lives with greater awareness, compassion, and a sense of personal empowerment.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t always been a smooth road. One of the challenges I’ve encountered professionally is that astrology can still be widely misunderstood. For some people, their only exposure to astrology has been through generalized Sun-sign horoscopes, while others may view it as something very deterministic or fatalistic, as though the birth chart dictates exactly who we are or what is destined to happen to us. The way I practice astrology is quite different from either of those perspectives.

One of the things I’m passionate about is helping people experience the depth that astrology can offer as a tool for self-reflection and self-understanding. A natal chart contains so many layers beyond our Sun sign, and I approach it as a symbolic map that can illuminate different dimensions of our personality, our gifts and challenges, recurring patterns, relationships, and areas of growth and development. I also work with planetary transits as a way of exploring the larger seasons and transitions we may be moving through. For me, astrology isn’t about taking away someone’s agency or telling them what is going to happen. It’s about offering another lens through which we can better understand ourselves and our experiences, while remembering that we still have choice in how we engage with what we’re moving through.

On a much more personal level, one of the greatest challenges I’ve faced while building my business has been navigating chronic illness. I began experiencing health issues in late 2021, right around the time I was preparing to launch my business, and those challenges continued through 2022 and 2023 before becoming significantly more difficult in 2024, when I received a chronic illness diagnosis. Managing my health alongside a growing business has required me to continually reassess what I’m realistically able to take on.

One of the hardest parts has been having so much passion and excitement for what I want to create while not always having the physical energy or capacity to bring those ideas to life at the pace I would like. I’ve had to learn to budget my energy, be thoughtful about what I commit to, and accept that there are periods during treatment or a difficult flare when my health has to take priority. As someone who genuinely loves my work and has many ideas for how I’d like to grow and expand it, learning to honor those limitations has not always been easy.

At the same time, I can see ways this experience has deepened me, both personally and in the way I work with others. Living with chronic illness has given me greater compassion for people navigating difficult experiences, particularly struggles that may not always be visible from the outside. It has also given me a much deeper appreciation for vitality, for the times when I do feel well, and for things I might once have taken for granted.

Throughout this chapter, I’ve also found myself turning to my own birth chart and observing the larger transits and eclipse cycles unfolding alongside different periods of my health journey. Astrology hasn’t taken away the difficulty of what I’ve experienced, but it has given me a symbolic framework through which I can reflect on the deeper themes of this chapter and find meaning within some of what I’ve been moving through. In many ways, I’ve had to practice some of the same things I hope to offer others through my work: greater self-compassion, an understanding that life moves through different seasons, and trust that even during difficult periods, we can continue learning more deeply about ourselves.

We’ve been impressed with Abbie Coe Astro, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
What I feel is most distinctive about my work is the way I integrate astrology with my background in Depth Psychology, coaching, and other holistic and creative practices I’ve explored over the years. My graduate work in Depth Psychology gave me a deep appreciation for archetypes, symbolism, the unconscious, and the ways we create meaning from our experiences, and those ideas naturally inform the way I approach astrology today.

When I’m working with someone, I don’t see myself as an authority who is there to tell them who they are or what they should do with their life. I may understand the symbolic language of the birth chart, but they are the expert on their own lived experience. I really believe a reading should feel like a conversation. I value creating a collaborative space where we can explore what is showing up in the chart alongside what they already know, feel, and sense about themselves. Their own experiences, reflections, and insights are an important part of the process. One of the things I love most is watching someone recognize themselves in their chart and have that moment of feeling deeply seen or validated. Sometimes understanding why a certain part of ourselves operates the way it does can create so much more compassion for ourselves.

Creating a safe and supportive space is also very important to me. My training in Depth Psychology placed a strong emphasis on compassionate witnessing and on the importance of being able to hold space for another person’s experience without imposing our own interpretation onto it. I tend to be naturally empathic and intuitive as well, and I bring a lot of genuine care and curiosity into my sessions. My hope is that people leave feeling not only that they understand their chart better, but that they understand themselves better.

My foundational offering is an in-depth natal birth chart reading. Rather than focusing only on someone’s Sun sign or a few individual placements, we explore the chart as a whole and look at the different patterns, archetypes, gifts, challenges, and developmental themes that may be present. I also offer forecast readings for returning clients, where we can explore the planetary cycles and transits that correspond with the season of life they’re currently moving through.

Another important part of my work is Astro-Empowerment Coaching, which allows us to go beyond a single reading and work together over a longer period of time. These sessions combine astrology and coaching as we explore what is currently arising in someone’s life, establish intentions or goals, and look at how their personal astrological cycles may symbolically reflect some of the themes they’re navigating. Depending on the person, those themes might involve career and purpose, relationships, home and family, identity, creativity, or a period of deeper transition and transformation. I often incorporate the lunar cycle into this work as well, using its natural rhythm as a framework for intention-setting, reflection, and reassessment.

I also really love creating fun community experiences where astrology becomes something people can engage with together rather than only something they receive intellectually. Over the years, I’ve facilitated New and Full Moon gatherings, Lunar Alchemy classes, retreats, mini readings, and collaborative workshops that have woven astrology together with things like tarot, essential oils, ritual, intention-setting, and vision boarding. I’ve participated in local holistic events such as Conscious Fest, offered readings through metaphysical shops, and brought astrology into women’s retreats and private events, including bachelorette gatherings here on the Central Coast.

That experiential and creative side of my work is especially meaningful to me because it brings together so many parts of my background. In Depth Psychology, I became fascinated by the power of imagery, symbolism, creativity, and ritual to help us access parts of ourselves that aren’t always reached through intellectual understanding alone. Whether we’re working with the symbolism of a birth chart, creating a vision board around a New Moon, pulling an oracle or tarot card, or simply sharing our experiences in a circle, I’m interested in helping people develop a more personal and lived relationship with these symbolic languages.

Ultimately, the word empowerment is central to everything I do. I never want astrology to become something that makes a person feel dependent upon an astrologer or afraid of what their chart says. I want it to help people reconnect with their own inner knowing. To me, the birth chart can offer a beautiful symbolic map of our patterns, potentials, challenges, and possibilities, but we still have agency in how we choose to work with what we discover.

If someone leaves a session feeling more seen, more compassionate toward themselves, more aware of the season they’re moving through, and more connected to their own gifts, sense of purpose, and what they feel called to bring into the world, then I feel I’ve done what I hoped to do.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
One of the first things that comes to mind when I think about success is a quote often attributed to Ralph Waldo Emerson that has resonated with me for many years. It speaks about success not in terms of status or achievement, but in terms of laughing often, earning the respect and affection of others, appreciating beauty, leaving the world a little better, and knowing that even one life has breathed easier because you have lived.

That has always felt much closer to my own definition of success. To me, success is ultimately about being true to yourself and building a life around what genuinely matters to you, even when other people may not fully understand or celebrate the choices you’re making. I think there can be so much pressure to measure success externally, through status, recognition, income, or what our lives look like from the outside, but those things don’t necessarily tell us whether we are living in a way that feels meaningful or authentic to who we really are.

My background in Depth Psychology has also shaped the way I think about this through the concept of individuation, or the lifelong process of becoming more fully who we uniquely are. For me, success is deeply connected to that: continuing to know ourselves more honestly, having the courage to honor what we discover, and finding ways to put our natural, God-given gifts to use in the world. I think when we are living in greater alignment with who we are, we’re often able to contribute from a place that feels more alive and genuine, and other people can feel and benefit from that as well.

I also believe there can be something quietly empowering about giving ourselves permission to be fully ourselves. When we do that, we can sometimes give other people permission to do the same. So for me, success isn’t necessarily about reaching a particular level of recognition or arriving at some final destination. It’s about being able to look at the life I’m creating and know that I’m being true to myself, using the gifts I’ve been given in ways that feel meaningful, contributing something of value to others, and hopefully encouraging other people to more fully embrace who they are too.
