Today we’d like to introduce you to Dakota Engle.
Hi Dakota, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Engle Property and Home Services really started with a combination of experience, opportunity, and a desire to build something of our own.
My fiancé, Dakota, has spent years working hands-on in flooring and general construction. He’s always been the type of person who takes a lot of pride in his work and pays attention to the little details, sometimes to the point of perfectionism. Over the years, friends, family, and people in our community would ask him to help with projects around their homes, and we started realizing there was an opportunity to turn what he was already good at into something bigger.
As our family grew, that idea became much more meaningful to us. We wanted to create something that could provide for our family, give us more control over our future, and eventually become something our children could be proud of.
That’s how Engle Property and Home Services came to life.
Dakota the father to our two young boys handles the majority of the hands-on work in the field, while I, Shayna and Momma have naturally taken on the business side; marketing, customer communication, scheduling, leads, branding, and helping build the systems behind the company. Neither of us necessarily set out expecting those exact roles, but we’ve found that our strengths complement each other really well.
We’re still a young and growing company, and honestly, that’s one of my favorite parts of our story. We’re building this from the ground up. Every client, every project, every referral, and every lesson is helping shape what we want this company to become.
Our goal isn’t simply to complete home projects. We want to build a business known for quality work, honesty, communication, and treating someone’s home with the same level of care we would want someone to give our own.
Ultimately, Engle Property and Home Services is about building something lasting, not only for the homeowners we work with, but for our own family and our future as well.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely has not been a smooth road, but I think that’s also what has made building this business so meaningful.
One of our biggest challenges has simply been learning how to build a business while actively running one. Dakota came into this with years of hands-on experience in flooring and construction, but being great at the work and owning a business are two very different things. Suddenly, we weren’t just thinking about the project in front of us—we were learning about licensing, insurance, contracts, bookkeeping, estimating, marketing, lead management, taxes, and all of the behind-the-scenes pieces that customers rarely see.
We also started this during a very full season of our lives. We’re raising two very young children, and I was on maternity leave with our youngest when we really began putting everything into building the company. Balancing a new baby, a toddler, our household, my own career, and a growing business has definitely tested us.
Another challenge has been learning what our work is worth. When you’re new, there’s a temptation to say yes to everything, lower your prices to win the job, or take every lead that comes your way. We’ve had to learn that building a sustainable business sometimes means saying no, setting boundaries, pricing our work appropriately, and understanding that not every project or customer is the right fit.
There have been plenty of moments where we’ve questioned ourselves, made mistakes, changed direction, or had to figure something out as we went. But every challenge has forced us to become better… Not only at the work itself, but at communicating with customers and understanding what kind of company we ultimately want to build.
We certainly don’t have everything figured out yet, and I actually think there’s something special about being able to say that. We’re still in the beginning of our story. We’re learning, growing, and building the foundation of this company one project and one customer at a time.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
At Engle Property and Home Services, we help homeowners take care of, repair, improve, and transform their homes. Our work ranges from flooring, painting, drywall, trim and carpentry to exterior repairs, pressure washing, property maintenance, and larger home improvement projects.
Dakota is the craftsman behind the majority of our projects. His background is rooted in flooring and general construction, and one of the things that stands out most about his work is his attention to detail. He genuinely cares about how something looks when it’s finished, how well it functions, and whether it’s going to hold up over time. He isn’t someone who is comfortable saying, “That’s good enough,” just to get to the next job.
I handle much of what happens behind the scenes – customer communication, scheduling, marketing, estimates and follow-up, as well as building the systems that allow us to provide a better overall experience for our clients. Together, we’ve tried to create a company where the quality of the work and the way people are treated are equally important.
I think what sets us apart most is how personal this business still is. When someone reaches out to Engle Property and Home Services, they’re talking directly to the people behind the company. Our name is attached to every project we complete, so our reputation matters tremendously to us.
We’re especially proud of the trust we’re beginning to build with our customers. Some of the most rewarding projects aren’t necessarily the biggest ones – they’re the moments when someone initially calls us for one repair and then trusts us enough to come back for another project or recommend us to someone they know.
We’re building this company for the long term. We want Engle Property and Home Services to become a name people in our community associate with quality craftsmanship, reliability, honest communication, and someone they feel comfortable calling when something in their home needs to be taken care of.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
More than anything, we want people to know that Engle Property and Home Services is being built with a lot of heart behind it. This isn’t just a business to us – it’s something we’re building for our family, our future, and hopefully one day, our children.
We’re incredibly grateful for every homeowner who takes a chance on a growing local business. Every project matters to us, whether it’s a small repair that’s been sitting on someone’s to-do list or a much larger transformation of their home. We know that inviting someone into your home requires trust, and that’s something we never want to take for granted.
We’re currently serving homeowners throughout Ventura County and surrounding areas of Los Angeles County, and we’re excited to continue growing our presence in the communities we call home.
We’re still at the beginning, which makes this chapter especially exciting. Someday, when Engle Property and Home Services has grown into everything we envision it becoming, we’ll be able to look back at these first customers, first projects, long nights, lessons, mistakes, and little victories and know that this is where it all started.
