Today we’d like to introduce you to Devanté Kirkpatrick.
Hi Devanté, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Okay soo before anything, growing up my mom cut my hair from kindergarten till about 4th grade, and as I got older I wanted to go to a barbershop to get my haircut. Every time I waited to get a haircut from my barber, I watched him cut and asked him questions on how to do fades and line ups while I waited for my haircut. From that moment I started practicing haircuts on my younger siblings with the trimmers and clippers my parents had at the house. Around 8th grade I had moved from Madera Ca to Lake Elsinore Ca and being new to the area I didn’t have a barber. So I took matters into my own hands & started practicing on my own hair. Around this time YouTube and social media just came out so I watched tutorials on how to blend fades and do line ups. What quickly became a hobby turned into passion. Going into Highschool freshman year I offered to cut some of my friends hair and before you knew it I was cutting up half the school in my parents garage.Thinking back on this is very inspiring & it keeps me going for what I do today. A couple years after Highschool I starting working at a shop in LA for a few years before I started having my own studio & doing house call appointments. I did this on going for a few years that led up to building a good clientele which opened doors for me to cut up celebrities, athletes, militaries & corporate job offices. I now reside at In The Cut Barbershop in Lake Elsinore Ca where I’m able to showcase my talents & skills I’ve learned throughout my journey in barbering.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It honestly wasn’t a smooth road, with starting anything there’s always trial & error but it’s mainly how you take it, some get discouraged some flat out quit or some accept the challenge & for me I love a challenge. Some of the challenges I faced was being confident in my haircuts. Clients missing their appointments or clients not paying for haircuts when I started out. I over thought a lot & I wanted to better my craft so I did anything to keep learning.
