Meet Jaime of J MARIE

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jaime.

Hi Jaime, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’ve loved fashion for as long as I can remember. Growing up in Santa Barbara, I was the girl cutting up Vogue magazine, putting outfits together, and always finding a way to make fashion part of my life. After graduating from Fordham University, I spent several years working in fashion PR, retail, and visual merchandising, which gave me a good perspective on the industry and a real understanding of what women actually want to wear.

Over the years, I kept coming back to the idea creating something of my own. I wanted to make the pieces I was always searching for myself; beautiful, effortless silk dresses that felt elevated but still easy wear. Eventually, that idea became J MARIE.

I launched J MARIE in 2025, designing the collection in Santa Barbara and producing everything locally in Los Angeles. Santa Barbara is really at the heart of the brand, from the elevated luxurious feeling of the dresses to the names of the dresses, which are inspired by local neighborhood and landmarks.

It’s been incredibly rewarding to see something that started as a dream become a real, growing brand. Today, J MARIE is sold online and through select local boutiques, and I’m continuing to grow the collection while staying true to what I wanted the brand to be from the beginning: effortless, beautiful pieces that women can wear and love for years.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely hasn’t been a completely smooth road, but think that’s part of building something from the ground up. Starting your own brand means suddenly wearing every hat – designer, marketer, salesperson, customer service, production manager and everything in between. One of the biggest challenges has been learning the business side as I go, especially production. Manufacturing locally and in small quantities is really important to me, but it comes with higher costs and its own set of challenges. As a small, self-funded brand, every decision matters and I’ve had to learn when to take a risk, when to be patient, and when to pivot. There have definitely been moments of trial and error, but I’ve learned so much through each one. I think the biggest lesson has been to trust my instincts and remember that growth doesn’t have to happen overnight. I’m building J MARIE thoughtfully, and I want to create something that has longevity rather than rushing the process.

We’ve been impressed with J MARIE, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
J MARIE is a Santa Barbara based women’s clothing brand centered around effortless, feminine pieces made from 100% silk. I design everything with the idea that getting dressed should feel easy; pieces you can throw on with sandals for a day by the water and then dress up for a night out. Many of the styles are bias-cut, so they move beautifully with the body and are designed to feel timeless rather than trend driven.

Santa Barbara is really woven into the DNA of the brand. The prints and silhouettes are inspired by the coastal lifestyle I grew up with, and each dress is named after a local neighborhood or landmark.

What sets J MARIE apart is the combination of luxury and ease, but also how intentionally everything is made. Our dresses are produced ethically in small quantities in Los Angeles, which allows me to stay closely involved in the process and avoid overproduction.

I’m most proud that I’ve been able to build a brand that feel authentically connected to where I’m from while supporting local manufacturing. Seeing women wear J MARIE on vacations, to weddings, out to dinner, or simply in their everyday lives is incredibly rewarding. More than anything, I want readers to know that there is a real person behind the brand. J MARIE is independently owned, thoughtfully made, and very much a labor of love.

What’s next?
I’m really excited to continue growing J MARIE thoughtfully. I’m working on expanding the collection beyond dresses, starting with our new silk scarf tops, which I’ve actually been making by hand myself in Santa Barbara. I love the idea of slowly building out the J MARIE world while staying true to the effortless, coastal feeling the brand was founded on.

I’d also love to continue expanding our wholesale presence and partner with more boutiques and retailers that really understand the brand, while doing more pop-ups and events where I can meet customers in person.

Long term, my goal is to grow J MARIE without losing what makes it special; beautiful silk pieces, limited production, local manufacturing, and a strong connection to Santa Barbara. I’m excited to see where it goes and to keep evolving the brand organically.
