Meet Lori Fulmer of Central Coast (California)

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lori Fulmer.

Hi Lori, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Like many creative journeys, mine began unexpectedly.

My daughters kept asking me what I wanted for Christmas, and honestly, I couldn’t think of anything. I’ve always loved creating with my hands, whether it is knitting, crocheting, scrapbooking, or crafting of some sort. Around that time, I had completely fallen in love with The Great British Bake Off. My favorite episodes were always the ones that showcased beautiful cake decorating, and somewhere in the back of my mind, I became curious about learning the art of decorating cakes myself. So, when my family kept asking what I wanted for Christmas, I finally said, “Maybe just a few basic cake decorating supplies.”

After receiving some basic cake decorating tools for Christmas, when January rolled around, I dove into online tutorials and beginner cake decorating classes, eager to learn the fundamentals. I had no expectations beyond learning something new. What I didn’t realize was that one Christmas gift would completely change the direction of my life. The more I practiced, the more I fell in love with transforming buttercream into flowers and creating cakes that looked like edible works of art.

What began as a creative outlet soon turned into something much more. Before long, I was brave enough to share a few of my cakes on social media. To my surprise, friends began asking if I sold my cakes. I remember thinking, “Well… no, but I guess I can!” From there, friends, family, and eventually people I had never met before began trusting me to create cakes for some of the most important moments of their lives, and Inspired Frosts was born.

Today, Inspired Frosts is a boutique cake studio in Ventura specializing in handcrafted buttercream floral wedding cakes, vintage-inspired buttercream artistry, floral cupcakes, and custom cakes for life’s most meaningful celebrations.

As the business continued to grow, it eventually became too busy for me to handle all of the baking and decorating on my own. That’s when my husband joined the team as Inspired Frosts’ Chief Baker. As a professionally trained chef, he brought years of culinary experience, making it a natural transition and allowing me to focus even more on the artistic side of the business.

Every design is custom created from scratch, and one of my favorite parts of the process is collaborating with my clients to bring their vision to life. Before I ever bake a cake, I create personalized design sketches that allow my clients to see their unique design take shape. Together, we refine every detail until it’s exactly what they envisioned and hopefully even better.

What I love most is being invited into life’s biggest milestones – weddings, birthdays, anniversaries, baby showers, and celebrations of all kinds. It’s incredibly rewarding to know that something I create becomes part of a family’s memories and photographs for years to come.

I’ve always been someone who loves to create. Crafting has been one of my passions for as long as I can remember, so I love that this career allows me to combine artistry and craftsmanship with celebrating people.

Since this beautiful craft came into my life, I’ve made it my goal to never stop learning. Every cake teaches me something new, and every client has a unique story to tell. I believe one of the most important parts of my job is truly listening, hearing not only what my clients are asking for, but understanding the feeling they’re hoping to create. My greatest reward is bringing their vision to life in a way that’s even more beautiful than they imagined.

I don’t think I will ever stop learning this special craft. I love seeking out what I consider the very best cake artists and decorators, learning from their experience and their skills, and then challenging myself to practice until I’ve truly made the technique my own. Whether I’m mastering a new buttercream flower, exploring vintage piping techniques, or finding inspiration in nature, I’m constantly learning, growing, and pushing myself creatively.

Looking back, it’s amazing to think that a love of a baking show and a simple Christmas gift sparked a passion that became Inspired Frosts. What started as curiosity has grown into a business that allows me to create edible art, celebrate life’s most meaningful moments, and wake up every day grateful that I get to do what I love.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Before now, I had never started my own small business and the journey hasn’t been without its challenges.

One of my biggest balancing acts has been building Inspired Frosts while continuing to work a full-time corporate career. It has meant many early mornings, late nights, weekends spent creating, and learning how to balance two careers that I genuinely care about.

Another challenge has been space. Inspired Frosts is a home-based boutique cake studio, and while I’m incredibly grateful for where I started, my business has grown to the point where my cake space and kitchen is beginning to feel small. It’s a wonderful problem to have, but it has definitely challenged me to become more organized, efficient, and intentional with every inch of my workspace.

Perhaps the biggest challenge, but yet one I’m grateful for, is that the business has been growing faster than I ever imagined. Learning how to manage that growth while maintaining the level of quality, artistry, and personal service that my clients expect has been incredibly important to me. I’ve never wanted to sacrifice craftsmanship for volume.

Every challenge has become an opportunity to learn. Whether it’s finding better systems, investing in my education, or continually refining my craft, I’ve learned that growth isn’t just about baking more cakes, it’s about becoming a better artist and business owner every day.

Looking back, I wouldn’t change any of it. Every obstacle has helped shape both Inspired Frosts and me into what we are today.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in handcrafted buttercream florals for cakes and cupcakes, what I consider as buttercream artistry. Every design is custom created from scratch and thoughtfully tailored to each client’s celebration. Rather than offering a catalog of designs to choose from, I love collaborating with my clients to create something that reflects their personality, their story, and the occasion they’re celebrating.

One aspect of Inspired Frosts that I believe sets us apart is our personalized design process. I create custom cake and cupcake design sketches for nearly every client before the baking begins. For cakes, I share the sketches with my clients, giving them the opportunity to see their vision come to life, collaborate with me, make changes along the way, and feel completely confident in the final design before the first layer of cake is ever baked.

For cupcakes, my sketches become my creative blueprint. They help me thoughtfully plan the flowers, color palette, textures, and overall composition so that every bouquet or collection of cupcakes feels cohesive, artistic, and uniquely designed for each client’s celebration.

I’m also incredibly passionate about continual learning, so I regularly invest in online classes and workshops with cake artists I admire around the world. Whether I’m mastering a new buttercream flower, refining vintage piping techniques, or expanding my skills into sugar paste modeling and handcrafted fondant elements, I’m always looking for ways to grow as an artist and bring fresh inspiration to my clients. I especially enjoy creating custom details, like my recent fondant bicycle cake and other handcrafted cake toppers, that add personality and tell each client’s unique story.

What I’m most proud of isn’t just the cakes themselves, it’s the relationships I’ve built with my clients. I believe one of the most important parts of my job is truly listening. Every celebration has a story, and every client has a vision. My goal is to hear not only what they’re asking for, but also the emotion behind it, and then create something that exceeds their expectations.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I’ve never considered myself a huge risk-taker, but I do believe that growth almost always requires stepping outside of your comfort zone.

For me, the biggest risk was investing my time, money, and heart into a craft without knowing if it could ever become a successful business. When I first started, Inspired Frosts was simply a passion project. I loved creating, but I had no way of knowing whether people would value my work enough to turn it into a career.

As my skills grew, so did my willingness to take on more challenging designs. Every intricate wedding cake, buttercream flower, vintage piping technique, or handcrafted sugar paste model started with me thinking, “What am I doing? Can I really pull this off?” I’ve learned that the only way to answer that question is to be willing to try. Sometimes the first attempt is a complete hot mess, and I’ve learned to laugh at myself, take a deep breath, figure out what went wrong, and try again.

I think that’s true not only in cake decorating, but in life. Every mistake has taught me something, and every challenge has made me a better artist. Some of my favorite creations have come from projects that initially felt just beyond my abilities.

Today, I still feel a little fear and nervousness when I take on something I’ve never done before, but I’ve learned not to let those feelings stop me. Instead, I remind myself that every cake I’ve ever mastered started with not knowing if I could do it. Looking back, I’m grateful I didn’t let fear keep me from trying. Inspired Frosts exists today because I was willing to take that first small step, keep learning, and trust that every challenge would make me a better artist.

Partway through this journey, life threw us an unexpected challenge when my husband lost his job after nearly 13 years with the same company. Suddenly, Inspired Frosts became more than a creative passion, it became an opportunity to help support our family. That experience gave me even more determination to invest in my education, refine my craft, and build a business I could be proud of.

Today, I still feel those nerves and fears when I take on something I’ve never done before, but I’ve learned to see them as a sign that I’m growing. Looking back, I’m grateful I didn’t let fear keep me from trying. Some of my favorite creations and some of my greatest opportunities, have come from saying “yes” to challenges that once felt just beyond my reach.
