Meet Robert Olsen of Goldenstate Landscapes Inc.

Today we’d like to introduce you to Robert Olsen.

Hi Robert, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Goldenstate Landscapes was founded in 2008 with a simple objective: provide dependable, high-quality landscape services built on strong relationships and exceptional customer service. We began with landscape maintenance and irrigation projects, helping clients improve the health, appearance, and water efficiency of their properties during a challenging economic period.
Over the years, we’ve grown steadily by investing in our people, expanding our capabilities, and maintaining a long-term focus on quality and client satisfaction. Today, Goldenstate Landscapes is a full-service commercial landscape company serving HOAs, apartment communities, commercial properties, municipalities, and other institutional clients throughout the region.
Our services now include landscape maintenance, irrigation and water management, enhancements, landscape construction, and arbor care. While the company has evolved significantly since its early years, our philosophy remains the same: build lasting partnerships, take ownership of every property we manage, and consistently deliver results our clients can rely on. That commitment has allowed us to grow into a trusted regional partner while maintaining the personalized service that has defined our company from the beginning.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Like any growing business, our path has included its share of challenges, but each stage of growth has required us to become a better organization. As the company has evolved, so have our leadership team, our systems, and our expectations for ourselves.
In the early years, I was involved in nearly every aspect of the business—from sales and estimating to project management and field operations. Today, one of my greatest sources of pride is the leadership team we’ve built. We have talented professionals throughout the organization who bring expertise, accountability, and a shared commitment to delivering exceptional service for our clients.
We’ve successfully navigated major economic shifts, changing regulations, labor challenges, and the operational demands that come with growth. Those experiences reinforced the importance of investing in our people, developing strong processes, and remaining adaptable in an ever-changing industry.
Looking back, I wouldn’t describe the journey as easy, but I would describe it as incredibly rewarding. Every challenge has contributed to building a stronger company, a stronger team, and a better experience for our clients.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Goldenstate Landscapes Inc.?
Goldenstate Landscapes is a full-service commercial landscape company providing maintenance, landscape construction, irrigation and water management, arbor care, and low-voltage landscape lighting throughout California’s Central Coast and surrounding regions.
We serve a diverse portfolio of properties, including HOAs, apartment communities, office campuses, healthcare facilities, retail centers, municipalities, and other commercial developments. Our approach goes beyond maintaining landscapes—we help clients protect and enhance their property investments through proactive management, sustainable practices, and long-term planning.
What distinguishes Goldenstate Landscapes is our commitment to responsive service, technical expertise, and lasting client relationships. We believe every property has unique objectives, and we tailor our services to improve curb appeal, maximize water efficiency, support safety, and deliver consistent results throughout the year.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
Our industry is experiencing a period of unprecedented change. Labor availability, rising operating costs, evolving government regulations, and increasing client expectations are reshaping how landscape companies operate. Successfully attracting, developing, and retaining a skilled workforce has become one of the defining challenges of our business, and I believe those pressures will continue to intensify over the next decade.
At the same time, California’s long-term water challenges are fundamentally changing the way landscapes are designed, managed, and maintained. Water conservation is no longer simply a sustainability initiative—it’s becoming a core business priority for property owners. Smart irrigation technology, drought-tolerant landscapes, and data-driven water management will continue to play an increasingly important role in our industry.
Technology is advancing just as quickly. Artificial intelligence, automation, connected irrigation systems, and eventually autonomous vehicles and equipment have the potential to transform how we operate. While many of these innovations are still emerging, the pace of change is accelerating, and companies that fail to adapt will quickly find themselves behind.
More than ever, success will depend on an organization’s ability to anticipate change rather than simply react to it. Economic conditions, workforce dynamics, environmental priorities, and technology are all evolving simultaneously, creating both challenges and opportunities. At Goldenstate Landscapes, we embrace that reality. We believe continuous improvement, innovation, and a commitment to our people are what will allow us to continue delivering exceptional value to our clients for years to come.
