Rising Stars: Meet Deprise Brescia of Central Coast (California)

Today we’d like to introduce you to Deprise Brescia.

Hi Deprise, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I believe the paths we take and the experiences we go through along the way give us the texture that creates an interesting life. The ride creates memories, moments and hopefully pearls of wisdom we carry with us throughout our journey.

I have always felt connected to my artistic side, those roots run deep on both sides of my family. My father was in a band with my grandfather playing all kinds of instruments, he also worked in wood, creating furniture and clocks. My mother was into photography, painting and jewelry making. She helped me sketch the Santa Clara Mission, where I won my first award as an artist in fourth grade. I was exposed to so many interesting things as a child: art, museums, dance, baton twirling, ice skating, gymnastics, softball, soccer, cheerleading, volleyball, meditation, metaphysics, quantum physics, spirituality and religion.

Fast forward to college, a change of majors from Business to Dance and Theater Arts was the real shift into performing arts. While still in college I signed with Wilhelmina Models LA and began traveling the world as a swimwear and fitness model. I learned about photography, lighting, long hours, and early mornings in some of the most breathtaking locations around the world. I took in different cultures, different artforms, different people. It was an exciting and unforgettable experience.

I began collecting concepts, and beliefs, ideas and connecting the dots. It helped me see, we are all more alike than we are different. These experiences helped breakdown stereotypes and mistaken beliefs about different cultures, people, and places around the world. It really is a small world.

My commercial work led to television and theater. A working member of SAG-AFTRA for over 3 decades and a founding member of GuerilLa Theater created a strong foundation in the arts. I loved being a performing artist, but I always felt I had more creativity to share. I wrote scripts and books, poetry and poems I saw glimpses of visual art that was to come, illustrating many spiritual concepts I held dear. All these experiences were beginning to blend. I started merging science and spirituality into art, first into films for the LA club scene, then into visual art for walls and spaces.

My comfort with wood and building things in my father’s shop allowed me to shift that skill set into many of the art installations I have created, like my Moo Monarch butterfly cow for the Cow Parade 2016 in SLO for the city of Pismo Beach or the 8 foot tall crystal pyramid that resides inside the Deprise Brescia Art Gallery in Paso Robles, California.

A little over a decade ago is when I made a serious jump from performing arts back into visual arts, and I brought all these experiences with me. I merged a lifetime of learning into much of the artwork I create today. I needed a safe space to display and share the transformational energy art I created. A place I could create an environment conducive to the kind of art that resonated with me most.

Using meditation grids with crystals and high energy stones, creatively blended into the art with positive words, prayers, and intentions layered into the work is where it started. What if I could mix science and spirituality into beautiful artwork to uplift people, places and spaces. How awesome would that be? This is why I opened, ‘Deprise Brescia Art Gallery’ 6 years ago. I wanted to do it my way and mix all the things I loved into a space to make people feel uplifted, beautiful and inspired.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not always been a smooth ride, but the bumps create the texture that makes life so interesting. We learn so much more from the struggles along the way. Pacing myself, staying focused and on task. A key part was removing distractions, negativity and toxic situations. I have learned how to balance things better, work, sleep, family and so on. Sometimes I would create wildly then be exhausted. I would lose a lot of time recovering from these exhaustive ways of working. I have a much more balanced approach nowadays.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am an artist, I think I am best known for my ‘Transformational Energy Art’ that is artwork that mixes science and spirituality into the work with the intention of uplifting people, places and spaces. My innovative encaustic works are one of the things I specialize in, sculpted paintings embellished with gorgeous stones and crystals. I think of it as high energy art.

I think the way I combine different materials and mediums together is what sets myself apart from other artists working in the same or similar mediums. Also, the use of science and spirituality in the artwork is something I have not found many other artists doing. I carve, write and paint positive words and prayers into the artwork with the intention of raising the frequency, based on the HADO work of Dr. Masaru Emoto. He is the Japanese scientist that proved our thoughts and words have an impact upon water and therefore ourselves and the earth.

I am also quite proud of the work I have done with Veterans in the arts. I received congressional and senatorial recognition in 2018, 2019 and 2023 for a lot of that work. Helping other through art is a great passion I have.

What are your plans for the future?
I do have some great plans for the future, they incorporate more experiential art. I think people need to sit with art, be with art, and generally experience the energy of it in a safe place. I want to create that environment in a slightly different way. That is about all I can give you on this for now. Let’s just say, more to come when the time is right!
