Today we’d like to introduce you to Miriam Montoya.
Hi Miriam, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I started Sugar Treats n Cakes from home with a passion for creating desserts that felt more artistic and personal than traditional grocery store cakes. What began as a creative outlet slowly turned into a business a friends, family, and eventually clients started requesting custom cakes for their special events.
Over time, I taught myself different decorating techniques, experimented with flavor combinations, and invested countless hours into improving both the design and quality of my work. As a self – taught cake artist, I’ve learned through experience, trial and error, and professionally.
Today, I specialize in custom cakes with a modern, luxury-inspired aesthetic, focusing on detailed designs, elegant finishes, and premium flavors. I currently run my business from home balancing family life, and my goal is to continue building recognizable brand in the wedding and luxury celebration industry.
What motivates me the most is being able to create something meaningful for peoples most important moments while also building a future for myself and my family.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, it definitely has not been a smooth road. I actually started baking around 10 years ago in another country, at a time when home based cake businesses were only beginning to grow. I was still a beginner and unfortunately I wasn’t able to fully support myself financially through cakes yet, so eventually I had to step away from baking and work in the restaurant industry for a few years.
later, after moving to San Diego, I decided to start again from zero. I began posting my custom cakes in local Facebook groups, and unexpectedly my work started getting a lot of attention, especially my fondant work and children cakes. Little by little, more clients started reaching out.
the journey has not been financially challenging , but also personally challenging at times. Before rebuilding my business, I was a single mother and had to slowly invest in my tools and equipment piece by piece while trying to create a better future for my two daughter. There were moments where I lost progress and had to start over again, with was emotionally difficult.
With the support of my husband, I was eventually able to continue learning through online classes, improve my skills, and invest more seriously into my business. Looking back, I think those difficult stages taught me resilience, patience, and how much I truly love this career.
Im still growing and evolving, but im proud that everything I’ve built so far has come from persistence, self- teaching, and passion for my craft.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
im a self- taught cake artist specializing in custom cakes with a modern, elegant, and luxury- inspired aesthetic. my work combines artistic design with detailed craftsmanship, focusing on clean finishes, thoughtful textures, and elevated flavor combinations. Over the years, I became specially known for my fondant work, children themed cakes, and more recently for creating refined cakes inspired by fashion, editorial design, and modern celebration trends. I love designing cakes that feel personal and artistic rather than mass- produced.
what I most proud of is how much I’ve grown creatively an professionally while building my business largely through self- education, persistence, and hands – on experience. every cake has helped me refine my style and better understand the type of artist and brand I want to become.
I believe what sets my work apart is the balance between creativity and emotion. I don’t just focus on making a cake looking beautiful- I want it to feel special, memorable, and meaningful for the people celebrating important moments in their lives.
I also pay close attention to flavor and presentation, because I believe a luxury cake experience should feel complete from start to finish.
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
one thing I’ve learned through this journey is that creativity and resilience often go hand in hand. building a business from scratch while balancing motherhood, personal challenges and constant self – growth has taught me to appreciate every small milestone along the way.
I still consider myself a growing artist, and im exited about continuing to evolve my style and expand my business into the luxury wedding and celebration industry. my goal is not only to create experiences and meaningful memories for people through my work.
I also hope my story can encourage other women, especially mothers and self-taught creatives, to keep pursuing their goals even if the path takes longer than expected.
