Daily Inspiration: Meet Christina Romney

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christina Romney.

Hi Christina, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I started teaching swimming more than 18 years ago because I saw how important water safety is for children and families. Over the years, what began as a passion for helping kids become comfortable in the water turned into something much bigger. I realized that swimming lessons are not just about learning strokes — they build confidence, teach life-saving skills, and help children overcome fears.

That passion eventually led me to create AquaGliders Swim School in Gilroy, California. We focus on private, one-on-one swim lessons because I believe every child learns differently and deserves personalized attention. Our program is designed to make kids feel safe, supported, and successful at their own pace.

As both a business owner and a parent, I understand how important trust is when families choose a swim instructor. I’ve worked hard to create an environment where children can learn while still having fun and building confidence in the water. Watching students go from being afraid of the pool to swimming independently is one of the most rewarding parts of what I do.

Today, AquaGliders continues to grow through word of mouth and the relationships we’ve built with local families. My goal has always stayed the same: helping children become safer, stronger, and more confident swimmers while creating a positive experience for both kids and parents.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely has not been a completely smooth road. Like many small businesses, there were challenges in the beginning — building trust in the community, growing through word of mouth, balancing scheduling, and learning the business side while still focusing on teaching. Starting a swim school also takes a lot of patience and consistency because you are working closely with both children and parents, and every family has different needs and goals.

One of the biggest challenges was building the business while maintaining the level of quality and personal attention I wanted every student to receive. I never wanted lessons to feel rushed or impersonal, which is why we focused on private, one-on-one instruction from the start. That approach takes more time and energy, but I believe it creates the best experience and results for students.

There were also challenges with seasonality and growth. Swim businesses naturally get much busier during warmer months, so learning how to manage demand, scheduling, and operations was a huge learning experience. At the same time, I’ve always tried to keep the focus on safety, trust, and relationships rather than simply growing as fast as possible.

Even with the challenges, the rewarding moments have always outweighed the difficult ones. Seeing a child overcome fear, learn to float independently, or gain confidence in the water reminds me why I started this journey in the first place.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
At AquaGliders Swim School, we specialize in private, one-on-one swim instruction focused on water safety, confidence building, and strong swimming fundamentals. We work with a wide range of students, from infants and first-time swimmers to children developing more advanced skills, but a large part of our focus is helping young swimmers become comfortable and safe in the water.

What we’re most known for is our personalized approach. Every child learns differently, so we tailor lessons to each student’s personality, comfort level, and learning pace. We focus heavily on building trust and confidence first, because once children feel safe and supported, their progress often accelerates naturally.

One thing I’m especially proud of is seeing students overcome fear and gain confidence not only in swimming, but in themselves. Watching a child go from hesitant around water to swimming independently is incredibly rewarding. We’ve also built strong relationships with local families over the years, and much of our growth has come through referrals and word of mouth, which means a lot to us.

What sets us apart is the combination of experience, patience, and individualized attention. With more than 18 years of teaching experience, we understand that successful swim lessons are about more than technique — they’re about communication, encouragement, consistency, and creating a positive environment where children can truly thrive. We work hard to make lessons both productive and enjoyable so students look forward to coming back each week.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
Something that surprises a lot of people is that while I’ve spent more than 18 years teaching swimming and building AquaGliders Swim School, I’m also a mom of four kids. Balancing motherhood and running a business has definitely been a journey, but it’s also shaped the way I connect with families and children in our program.

Swimming has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. I swam competitively from the age of 8 through 18, and that experience helped build the foundation for the instructor and business owner I am today. Competitive swimming taught me discipline, patience, consistency, and confidence — all things I now try to pass on to my students.

Another part of my story that many people may not know is that I’ve continued growing the business through several moves over the years. Each time our family relocated, I had to rebuild and reestablish the swim program in a new community. That came with challenges, but it also taught me resilience and reinforced how important relationships and trust are in this industry.

At the heart of everything, though, my biggest passion is helping children become safer and more confident in the water while creating a positive experience for families
