Exploring Life & Business with Jim Yates of Jim Yates Construction

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jim Yates.

Jim, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’ve been a wood worker for as long as I can remember. I built custom boxes, shelving, cabinets and other types of wood art and starting my own construction business in 1998. During Covid I started doing some lathe work and got addicted. After some experimenting with epoxy fills, I came up with a great method of using beautiful wood that was to unstable to turn without the epoxy. In the last 6 years I have branched out to river tables and charcuterie boards. I sell my pieces at local craft shoes and on line. I have shipped pieces to several countries and may states. This is a hobby turning into a small business.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Finding a good epoxy took a while. After 6 years i still make mistakes once in a while with ratios or poor mixing. I have been very fortunate on finding some really beautiful lumber. I now have a semi “clean” room for pouring charcuterie boards. Learning how to turn epoxy was a large learning curve and filling voids in the middle of a piece took a while. Marketing My work has ben the hardest.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a local contractor born and raised on the peninsula. I started as a maintenance/handyman and now do custom remodels, I specialize in kitchens and baths, but have done complete gut outs. My attention to detail, being able to work with my customers and subs I am proud of. Being able to solve difficult problems and get my customer what they want where most could not. I am a practical thinker but can think out of the box.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
camping at the lava beds national monument and exploring the caves.
