Today we’d like to introduce you to Jane Benight.
Hi Jane, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I began in the antiques retail business back in the 1980’s when I babysat my friend’s antique store when he was doing antique shows. I gradually worked more and more for him and then worked for the first antiques collective in the Monterey Peninsula; Antiques Warehouse. When they closed I rented a space at the Cannery Row Antique Mall. That was in 1996 and I have been there since. About 12 years ago we had the opportunity to buy the building and I was able to buy several spaces then.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
There were a lot of struggles setting up the current business model as it was a unique model; an antique store that was collectively owned and not rented. We had to change the zoning to antiques retail and is the only such zoning that we know of.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
