Today we’d like to introduce you to Brian Cowell.
Hi Brian, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started martial arts when I was just three years old. At the time, I was a shy kid who struggled with confidence and focus in school, and my parents were looking for something that could help me grow. What began as a childhood activity quickly became something that shaped every part of my life. Martial arts taught me discipline, resilience, confidence, leadership, and how to keep showing up even when things got difficult.
As I grew older, I realized martial arts was about much more than kicking and punching. It was about personal development, learning how to overcome challenges, and becoming someone capable of helping others do the same. At 15 years old, I started teaching martial arts and that experience completely changed the direction of my life. I loved seeing students gain confidence, improve their focus, and discover strengths they didn’t know they had.
While still training and teaching, I attended San Diego State University, where I earned a degree in Psychology and later completed my MBA. My background in psychology and martial arts eventually helped shape the vision behind SwiftKick Martial Arts. I wanted to create more than just another generic martial arts school in San Diego. I wanted to build a positive community where kids, teens, and adults could grow in confidence, leadership skills, practical self-defense abilities, and mental resilience in a safe and encouraging environment.
In 2007, that vision became reality when I opened SwiftKick Martial Arts. Since then, we’ve grown into a martial arts community serving families throughout Carlsbad, Rancho Bernardo, and North County San Diego. One of the things that makes SwiftKick unique is our blended approach to training. Instead of focusing on only one style, we combine techniques from boxing, kickboxing, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, wrestling, traditional martial arts (like Karate, Tae Kwon Do and Krav Maga), and modern self-defense systems to help students build practical skills and confidence for real life.
What means the most to me today is seeing the impact martial arts can have on people’s lives. We’ve watched shy kids become leaders, teens develop confidence and direction, adults improve their health and mindset, and families grow stronger together through training. That transformation is why I still love what I do after more than 35 years in martial arts.
At the end of the day, SwiftKick has never just been about martial arts classes. Our mission has always been much bigger than teaching kicks, punches, or self-defense techniques. We believe martial arts has the power to positively impact families, strengthen communities, and ultimately help change the world one person at a time. From the very beginning, our goal has been to create a martial arts community in San Diego where students not only become physically stronger, but also grow into confident leaders who make a meaningful difference in the lives of others.
That’s why community involvement is such a core part of who we are at SwiftKick Martial Arts. Throughout the year, we host and participate in events that bring families together, support local causes, and encourage students to step outside of their comfort zones to serve others. When students earn their black belts, we want them to understand that a true black belt is not defined by the belt around their waist, but by the mindset they carry into everyday life. To us, being a black belt means using your skills, discipline, and character to positively impact the people and community around you.
One example of this is our Future Community Leader Award, which recognizes young people throughout San Diego who demonstrate leadership, kindness, integrity, and a commitment to making their communities better. We actively encourage our students to pursue opportunities like this because we want them to see that leadership extends far beyond the training floor. Whether it’s volunteering, mentoring others, helping classmates, or supporting community initiatives, we believe these experiences help shape the next generation of compassionate and capable leaders.
Seeing students grow into confident young adults who contribute positively to their schools, families, and communities is one of the most rewarding parts of what we do. Our hope is that every student who trains at SwiftKick leaves not only with practical martial arts and self-defense skills, but with the mindset, resilience, and leadership qualities needed to create a lasting positive impact in the world around them.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely has not been a completely smooth road, and honestly, I think that’s true for any meaningful journey. Building a martial arts school and community from the ground up comes with a lot of challenges that people don’t always see from the outside.
When we first started SwiftKick Martial Arts, one of the biggest struggles was simply getting people to understand that we were trying to create something different. We weren’t interested in being just another martial arts school where students memorize moves and collect belts. Our vision was to build a positive community in San Diego focused on personal growth, leadership development, practical self-defense, and helping people become stronger mentally, emotionally, and physically. That takes time, consistency, and a lot of trust from families.
There were definitely difficult seasons along the way. Like many small businesses, we faced financial pressures, long hours, staffing challenges, and moments where we had to make difficult decisions while still trying to stay true to our mission and values. The COVID years were especially difficult for our industry. Overnight, we had to completely rethink how we served students and stayed connected with families while navigating so much uncertainty. But one thing that reinforced for us was how important community really is. Seeing our students, families, and instructors support each other during that time reminded us why we started SwiftKick in the first place.
At the same time, many of those struggles ended up becoming some of our greatest learning experiences. Martial arts teaches resilience, adaptability, and perseverance, and I’ve had to lean on those lessons constantly throughout this journey. Looking back, I think the obstacles helped shape not only the business, but also who I became as a leader, mentor, and coach. The rewarding part is that every challenge feels worth it when you see the impact on students and families.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about SwiftKick Martial Arts?
What truly sets us apart is the intentional focus we place on confidence, emotional resilience, leadership, discipline, and personal development. A big reason for that comes from my educational background. Alongside more than 35 years of martial arts training and coaching, I earned my Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology and later my MBA from San Diego State University. That combination of psychology, leadership, business, and martial arts heavily influenced how I designed the SwiftKick curriculum and coaching philosophy.
From early on, I became fascinated by why martial arts positively impacts people’s lives in such a powerful way. I experienced it personally as a shy kid struggling with confidence and focus, and later saw the same transformation happen in many of my students. Because of that, I didn’t want to create a “one-size-fits-all” martial arts program. I wanted to create a structured system that understood how people learn, how confidence develops, how habits are formed, and how to help students grow mentally and emotionally in addition to physically.
That led to the development of our curriculum and teaching systems at SwiftKick Martial Arts. Every program is intentionally designed around age-specific development, psychology, leadership principles, goal setting, and positive reinforcement. We combine techniques from multiple martial arts disciplines, including Tae Kwon Do, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, boxing, kickboxing, wrestling, and practical self-defense systems to develop our unique Module Method. All the while, focusing heavily on communication skills, emotional intelligence, perseverance, and leadership training.
I think another thing that sets us apart is that we genuinely care about building community. We are incredibly intentional about creating a positive, encouraging environment where students feel supported and challenged at the same time. We want families throughout Carlsbad, Rancho Bernardo, and San Diego to feel like SwiftKick is a place where people and families can grow together.
What I’m most proud of is the long-term impact we’ve been able to have on students and families over the years. Some students who started training with us as young children are now adults, leaders, instructors, and role models in their communities. My legacy is defined by students overcome anxiety, gain confidence, improve academically, develop leadership skills, or simply believe in themselves for the first time.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
One of the most important lessons I’ve learned throughout this journey is that real success is built through consistency and genuine relationships. Long-term growth comes from showing up every day, staying committed to your values, and continuing to improve little by little over time.
While it’s important to strive for having the best martial arts techniques, the best programs, or the best business strategy, I learned that the most impactful part of what we do is the relationships we build with students and families. People want to feel seen, encouraged, challenged, and supported. When students know you genuinely believe in them, it can completely change the way they see themselves.
Another major lesson has been the importance of adaptability and continuous learning. Martial arts constantly teaches humility because there is always more to learn, and I’ve tried to approach leadership and business the same way. Over the years, I’ve learned that staying open-minded, listening to feedback, and being willing to evolve is incredibly important, especially when serving families and communities with different needs.
My background in psychology also reinforced something I’ve seen over and over again in martial arts: confidence and resilience are built through experience, not through comfort. Growth usually happens when people are challenged in a supportive environment. That philosophy became a huge part of how we built the SwiftKick Martial Arts curriculum and culture. We want students to learn that setbacks, failures, and obstacles allow for opportunities to grow stronger, not be avoided.
At the end of the day, the biggest lesson has probably been this: the positive impact you have on people will always matter more than any award, achievement, or business milestone. Seeing students become more confident, resilient, and compassionate human beings is what makes this journey meaningful.
