Check Out Gerrie Shapiro’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gerrie Shapiro.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Transplanted from Pittsburgh, Pa in 1998. I’m a dog trainer and a professional artist. I recently had my first one-woman exhibition in 20 years. I’m an active on the B.O.D. of The Friendship Center Adult Day Care. I volunteer there every day and take a dog to visit our members.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
My art career was “put on hold” while I happily assumed the role of caregiver for my parents, my mother being non-ambulatory and my father experiencing memory loss.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Professional artist in many different mediums. I have shown nationally .

dog training daily. teaching our lucky SB dogs how to walk correctly on leash and smoothing out questionable behaviors.

The most important focus of my life now, is The Friendship Center of SB. The F.C. is a senior day center focused on dignified care of seniors experiencing memory loss and dementia . Our members are greeted with smiles, hugs, a full day of interesting activities, lunch, a snack and of course live music. The family caregivers have the opportunity to exhale and continue on with their day as we entertain their loved ones. I bring a dog everyday to bring some extra love. I am now on the Board of Directors. I am proud to say that the F.C recently was awarded “The non-profit of the year” by the Central Coast Chamber of Congress
