Today we’d like to introduce you to Avery Archie.
Hi Avery, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
The first video I made was a video of my neighbor riding his motorcycle on my mom’s VHS camera. I loved it so much and I immediately spend hours making an edit and posting it on youtube. From then on I caught the editing bug. My friends and I would make home movies in high school for fun and I would edit them all. I went to college and found a group of similar people and we did the same thing but in college. My post graduate life was filled with so many random avenues and jobs. My first job out of college was being a VFX assistant on a Cartoon Network show called The Annoying Orange where I would rotoscope all day and night. I was really interested in animation at the time and also did a few internships and some animation studios. Along the way I did alot of random freelance things as well, assistant editing for people, videography work etc. I started working with alot of dancers in LA and would do videos for them. I would still make short films and webisodes with my friends. We even started a youtube channel called The Social Renaissance Project and made web series and short films on that page. After doing that I landed some editing jobs editing mostly digital content for a company called Rndr Media and then later more digital media companies. I ended up working for a streaming service called STIRR editing and producing promos for them. Now I have continued my promo editing journey and am a producer/editor/writer for the TV Networks COMET, CHARGE and ROAR and have been doing that for the past 6 years or so! I still do alot of other creative work like on-set photography, videography and short films that I do alongside my full-time job!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Definitely not a smooth road! I don’t think it is for anyone. Looking back I’ve done so many random jobs and my path has changed so much. I’ve gone through lay-offs and things canceling and stuff like that. It is always a struggle to try and open your mind to new paths and there is always a fear of what comes next. There were periods I’d go through without any hopes of finding any more work or just periods of feeling down and depressed. It is hard to see the bigger picture sometimes but now I feel like I’ve gotten better at that.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a TV promo producer and editor. I make promos for TV networks. As a creative producer and editor I am more on the creative side. I get assigned a project for a show then I write, produce and edit the spot. That includes coming up with graphic ideas, writing the script, directing the voice over talent, and overseeing the creative process for each spot from start to finish. It has been really fun learning how to do this. I am most proud of my work where I get alot of creative freedom. I did a spot for the CHARGE TV Network where I got to do a Christmas theme and created a little santa murder crime scene for the show CSI Miami. I shot it in front of my parents house and did it with the help of my mom and my friend. It ended up winning a Promax award and that was really satisfying for me. I also created a spot for COMET TV that was graphic heavy and was really proud of the creative work my designer and I created. That one also won a Telly Award for promotional editing. I hope to create more stuff like that in the future.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
A bunch of kids and I grew up on the same street in my neighborhood. There were about 10 of us all the same age at one point. We would play outside all day and ride our bikes and explore the mountains. I loved it it was so fun. That is also how I ended up making my first little video so I’ll always remember that.
