Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeremy Layport.
Hi Jeremy, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Grew up in Paso Robles, playing sports, and played football in college. During college, my love of training and science behind it grew. Upon graduation, I decided to continue my education with a graduate school program and a graduate assistantship at San Jose State, where I could develop my coaching skills and education. I became a full-time assistant S&C coach for the Spartans in ’06 and worked there until 2012. From 2012 to 2014, I worked at a Division I school in San Francisco. Moved to AZ for a short stint before moving to Colorado to work at the University of Colorado with the football team. Upon my release from the CU in 2017, I was weary of the college grind and wanted to open up a small niche gym to develop strength and conditioning focused on StrongFirst principles and concepts. Getting into my 40’s, then I could totally see the need for S&C classes that actually taught students how to develop strength and tension, move, and train to live a robust life. Strength is a skill and should be taught as such. Far too many people were trying to crossfit themselves into an injury or not lifting anything heavy at all. This is why I started my business, Physical Culture.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I have been in S&C at a high level for 20+ years. Coaching is all I have ever done. That piece of things is easy, the business side is HARD. Not easy at all.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a Master Instructor for StrongFirst, a worldwide and renowned strength education organization. I certify personal trainers in the manner of barbell, kettlebell, and bodyweight strength training. It’s what I teach most to my students.
Functional Range Conditioning is another organization that focuses on mobility, and I also utilize it to maintain healthy joints and function.
The business side of things has led me to A. Ask for help and B. take classes to try and catch up on my knowledge base/experience level.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
Personally, I love coaching and interacting with people.
For my students, it is the experience they have when they’re learning and seeing progress.
