Inspiring Conversations with Tracy Anders Young of Central Coast Refillery

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tracy Anders Young.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Central Coast Refillery is a local, woman-owned small business founded by me, Tracy Anders Young. What began just two years ago as a simple curiosity — How can we do better? — evolved into a fully realized refill shop that proudly opened its doors on August 15th. Today, I’m grateful to serve our community six days a week, making sustainable living accessible and convenient. Sustainability isn’t a trend — it’s a commitment. I believe reducing single-use packaging, choosing reusable solutions, and supporting thoughtful alternatives can create real impact. Every refill, every reused container, and every conscious purchase helps keep waste out of landfills and supports a more circular way of living.

I also believe sustainability should feel welcoming, approachable, and rooted in community. Community is at the heart of everything we do. That’s why I proudly partner with local pottery, soap, and jewelry makers from the Central Coast. From handcrafted refill vessels to small-batch soaps and artisan jewelry, each item reflects the creativity, care, and craftsmanship of our local community.

When you shop at Central Coast Refillery, you’re supporting local women, artists, and small businesses who share a commitment to thoughtful, responsible production.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Getting the community back out to explore all of the new local merchants downtown has been a bit of a challenge. I frequently have community members stop in saying “I haven’t been downtown in three years.” The downtown area is shifting in a positive direction but communicating everything Atascadero has to offer to the locals has been the largest challenge.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Central Coast Refillery?
Instead of purchasing new bottles every time you run out of everyday essentials, we invite you to bring your own containers (or choose one in-store) and refill them with high-quality, thoughtfully sourced products.
Our refill offerings include:

Laundry detergent & fabric softeners
Dish soap & household cleaners
Hand soap, body wash & lotions
Shampoo & conditioner
Bubble bath and more

Refilling helps reduce waste, save money, and allows you to purchase exactly what you need — no excess, no single-use packaging. Choosing refillable products is one of the easiest ways to reduce your environmental footprint. By reusing containers and embracing refill systems, you help minimize plastic pollution, conserve resources, and move away from a disposable culture.

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
