Today we’d like to introduce you to Tamia Marie.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Hair has always been apart of my life. I have older cousins that are cosmetologists on mom and dad’s side. I’ve always been creative even with my clothes. However I was kinda a nerd in school and my grandmother who raised always had be in the books and in extracurricular activities after school. I never really knew at that time hair was my passion I just did as a hobby or simply because I didn’t want my grandmother to do it lol. I did my friends and family eventually but I still didn’t take it seriously. It wasn’t until my sophomore year at coppin state college that I realized hair was really my passion. I went to school and worked in retail at Mondawmin mall during the week and on weekends when I didn’t work I did hair at Transformations hair salon in park heights. I eventually quit and dropped out to pursue hair full time. I enrolled in Cosmetology school to learn everything there is to know about hair and since then I took off promoting myself as a hairstylist. I started to become well known for my lace installs. At first I was skeptical about adding lace into my services but I’m thankful I took a chance and did it. Taking risks and believing in my abilities is what landed me in LA. I applied to a well known salon in Los Angeles, CA and got hired! From there I knew that it was only but up for me and now I have celebrity clients and work as a hairstylist on set for different tv networks. I just finished tour with the Baddies on Zeus network and other projects that have not been released yet. I owe everything to GOD then me.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Nothing never comes easy you have to work for it and unfortunately fortunately there are lessons we have to learn. When you have no real role model or a blueprint it’s all trial and error. I first had to understand the type of commitment I’m making with starting my own business and becoming a brand. I knew that struggles would come that’s life and I know I can’t quit on myself! I made so many mistakes from doing hair to booking clients to selling hair to selling products to trying to open a storefront . Coming to LA I had and I am still learning the industry and that was a huge struggle; really a culture shock honestly. I’m used to Baltimore where things are different and it’s not as much opportunity like LA. I also had to stop working out of survival mode because I didn’t have to anymore. New levels new devils and I’m up for any challenge!
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a professional hairstylist. I work with celebrities and tv networks. I specialize in Lace wigs and extensions. I’m most known for how I melt the lace it gives straight out the scalp! I’m most proud of being able to set a good example of what perseverance looks like for my daughter and my family. What sets me apart from others is literally the way I think I’m different, weird, creative and all the above. I don’t mind a challenge I’m very confident in myself.
How do you define success?
I define success as feeling! It’s not physical for me it’s how I feel. I am successful period.
