Today we’d like to introduce you to Juliana Ramirez.
Hi Juliana, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My journey began in Mexico City, where I was born and raised. In 1994, at the age of 13, my life changed dramatically when my family immigrated to the United States in search of greater opportunities. Overnight, I left behind everything that was familiar—my home, extended family, friends, school, and the country I loved. Like many immigrant families, we started over from scratch. I had to learn a new language, adapt to a new culture, and find where I belonged, all while holding on to the values, traditions, and roots that continue to define who I am today.
Five years later, I began my career as a local bookkeeper. I didn’t take a traditional path into the profession. Although I attended college, I never completed a degree. Instead, I learned through experience, curiosity, continuous education, and an unwavering commitment to serving others. After 12 years working with local businesses, I founded JR Bookkeeping in 2012 with the dream of creating not only a business that would provide for my family, but one that would genuinely make a difference in people’s lives.
My faith in God has been the foundation of every step of my journey. Without Him, I am nothing. I recognize that the talents, opportunities, and abilities I have are gifts entrusted to me to place at the service of others. That perspective has shaped how I lead, how I serve, and how I define success—not by personal achievements alone, but by the positive impact I can have on the lives of others.
Along the way, I have also been incredibly blessed with mentors and coaches who saw potential in me before I fully saw it in myself. They challenged me to think differently, opened doors to opportunities I never imagined, and, perhaps most importantly, created a safe space for me to heal from the emotional impact of leaving everything behind to begin a new life in a new country. They helped me understand that leadership begins with knowing yourself, embracing your story, and having the courage to grow through it.
I have never walked this journey alone. I am deeply grateful for the unwavering support of my husband, my parents, my sisters, my incredible team, and the community that has believed in me every step of the way. Their encouragement has given me the strength to pursue big dreams and the humility to remember that success is always a shared accomplishment.
Today, I have the privilege of serving as an entrepreneur, accounting professional, business advisor, educator, speaker, and mentor. Through my work with JR Bookkeeping, the Economic Development Collaborative SBDC, Women’s Economic Ventures, SCORE, and other community organizations, I have been able to help thousands of entrepreneurs build stronger businesses and greater confidence in themselves.
Looking back, I realize my journey has never been only about accounting. It has been about faith, service, resilience, lifelong learning, and helping others believe that their past does not define their future. If my story can inspire even one person to pursue their dreams with courage, trust in God, and a heart for serving others, then every challenge along the way has been worthwhile.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Not at all. Like most entrepreneurial journeys, mine has been filled with both incredible highs and difficult challenges. As an immigrant, I learned early on that success comes through perseverance, hard work, and the willingness to keep moving forward even when the path isn’t clear.
When I founded JR Bookkeeping in 2012, I started with just one employee—myself—working from my living room. Building a business from the ground up meant wearing every hat, making sacrifices, and learning lessons that no textbook could teach. There were moments when I questioned whether I was making the right decisions, but I never lost sight of why I started: to serve entrepreneurs and make a meaningful difference in their lives.
Like many businesses, the COVID-19 pandemic brought significant challenges. At the same time, it reinforced our purpose. We worked tirelessly to help hundreds of small business owners navigate relief programs, understand changing regulations, and keep their businesses afloat. Those years reminded me that our work is about much more than bookkeeping—it’s about giving people hope and confidence during uncertain times.
Growth has also come with its own challenges. Building a team, learning to delegate, developing leaders, and creating systems that allow the business to thrive beyond me required a completely different skill set than being a great bookkeeper. Through mentorship, continuous learning, and a willingness to embrace change, we’ve transformed JR Bookkeeping into a collaborative, technology-driven firm.
Perhaps the most important lesson has been realizing that success isn’t about doing everything yourself. This year, my business partner and sister took an extended leave to prioritize her health. Supporting that decision reminded me that leadership means caring for people first. I’ve learned that we can’t serve others well if we neglect ourselves. Sometimes the strongest thing we can do is pause, reconnect with our purpose, and trust that taking care of ourselves ultimately allows us to make a greater impact on those we serve.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about JR Bookkeeping?
JR Bookkeeping is an award-winning, bilingual bookkeeping and accounting firm dedicated to helping small businesses and nonprofit organizations gain financial clarity, confidence, and peace of mind. Since our founding in 2012, we have grown from a one-person operation into a team of 10 professionals with a clear vision: to become the leading bookkeeping firm in our community.
We specialize in cloud-based bookkeeping, QuickBooks Online consulting, accounting system implementations, clean-up and catch-up projects, nonprofit accounting, and ongoing financial support for growing businesses. We proudly serve clients across a variety of industries, including hospitality, construction, professional services, retail, agriculture, childcare, and nonprofit organizations.
What truly sets us apart is that we don’t just keep books—we build partnerships. We believe bookkeeping is the foundation for better business decisions, and our role is to empower entrepreneurs with accurate financial information and the confidence to grow their businesses. Our proprietary 13-Step Bookkeeping Process, collaborative team approach, and commitment to continuous improvement ensure every client receives consistent, high-quality service from an entire team, not just one bookkeeper.
We are also proud to be an early adopter of QuickBooks Online, having transitioned our entire practice to the platform in 2018. We encourage every member of our team to become QuickBooks Online Certified, allowing us to provide clients with expert guidance and innovative solutions.
Perhaps what we’re most proud of is our impact beyond our clients. Through our work with organizations such as the Economic Development Collaborative (EDC), SCORE, and Women’s Economic Ventures (WEV), we provide bilingual education, mentorship, and financial training that empower entrepreneurs throughout California’s Central Coast and beyond. During the COVID-19 pandemic, we helped hundreds of small business owners navigate relief programs and access critical funding, reinforcing our belief that accounting is ultimately about serving people, not just managing numbers.
At JR Bookkeeping, our purpose is simple: Serve. Empower. Elevate. We measure our success not only by the accuracy of our work, but by the businesses we help strengthen, the jobs we create, and the positive impact we make in our community.
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
One thing that often surprises people is that while many know me as an accountant, entrepreneur, and speaker, my greatest personal journey has been an inward one. Building a successful business has been important, but learning to become the best version of myself has been even more transformational.
Over the years, I’ve invested as much in my personal growth as I have in my professional development. Through faith, mentorship, coaching, and self-discovery, I’ve learned that leadership starts from within. Some of the greatest breakthroughs in my life came not from learning a new accounting principle, but from healing, letting go of limiting beliefs, and learning to lead with authenticity and purpose.
People are often surprised to hear that I never completed a college degree. Instead, my career has been built through continuous learning, curiosity, and saying “yes” to opportunities to serve others. I also believe that other accountants and bookkeepers are partners, not competitors, and that collaboration creates a stronger profession for everyone.
Perhaps the biggest surprise is that, despite everything I’ve accomplished professionally, what brings me the greatest joy is being a wife, a mother, and someone who can use the gifts God has given me to make a positive difference in the lives of others. That’s the success I’m most proud of.
