Rising Stars: Meet Maya Bashir of National

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maya Bashir.

Hi Maya, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve always been drawn to creativity. Growing up in a family that valued design and the arts, it naturally became a part of who I am. While pursuing a career in the creative industry has never been considered the most stable path, I knew it was the one I wanted to take. In April of this year, I made the decision to fully commit to building my career as a creative designer, and it has been one of the most rewarding decisions I’ve made.

Today, I work primarily with growing businesses, entrepreneurs, and artists who are looking to build thoughtful, authentic brands. I’m the founder of LUME by Maya, a creative studio specializing in graphic design, branding, and marketing strategy. My goal is to help clients create visual identities that not only look beautiful but also tell meaningful stories and support long-term business growth.

Most recently, I launched a Mail Club for entrepreneurs who prefer a more hands-on approach to building their businesses. Through curated resources, creative guidance, and a supportive community, the club gives members the tools and confidence to grow their brands while still having access to professional insight when they need it. For me, design has always been about more than aesthetics—it’s about empowering people to bring their ideas to life.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Like many creatives, one of my biggest challenges has been learning to treat my passion like a business. Building a client base, finding consistent work, and overcoming the fear of putting myself out there have all been part of the journey. There have also been moments of self-doubt, especially in an industry that can be highly competitive and unpredictable.

Another challenge has been balancing creativity with the business side of running a studio. Design is only one part of what I do—there’s also marketing, client communication, finances, contracts, and constantly adapting to new trends and technology. It can be overwhelming at times, but every challenge has taught me something valuable.

Rather than seeing obstacles as setbacks, I’ve learned to view them as opportunities to grow. Each project, client, and lesson has helped shape both my work and my confidence as a designer and business owner. Those experiences have ultimately made me more resilient and more intentional about the way I serve my clients.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m the founder and creative director of LUME by Maya, a creative studio specializing in branding, graphic design, marketing strategy, and visual storytelling. I work closely with small businesses, entrepreneurs, and artists to create brands that feel authentic, memorable, and built for long-term growth rather than short-term trends.

My work spans everything from brand identities and packaging to websites, social media campaigns, and marketing materials. I enjoy taking an idea from its earliest stages and transforming it into a cohesive brand that reflects the client’s vision and connects with their audience.

One of the things I’m most proud of is creating a business that allows me to support other entrepreneurs as they build theirs. Beyond client work, I recently launched a Mail Club that provides creative resources, business guidance, and a collaborative community for entrepreneurs who want to grow their businesses while maintaining a hands-on approach.

What sets me apart is my focus on intention and relationships. I don’t believe great design is just about making something look good—it’s about creating something meaningful. Every project I take on is approached with research, strategy, and collaboration, ensuring each brand feels unique to the person behind it. I also prioritize working with growing businesses and artists because I enjoy being part of their journey and helping bring their ideas to life through thoughtful, handcrafted design.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up, I was always very creative, curious, and independent. I was the kind of person who constantly wanted to make something, whether that meant drawing, experimenting with different styles, decorating, or finding new ways to express an idea visually. Art and design were always present in my family, so creativity felt natural to me from a young age.

Personality-wise, I was observant and imaginative, but I could also be quiet and reserved. I often noticed small details that other people overlooked, which has become an important part of how I approach design today. I was also very determined once I became interested in something. I wanted to understand how it worked, improve at it, and make it feel like my own.

My interests were always connected to art, culture, storytelling, and business. I loved seeing how colors, typography, fashion, music, and visual details could communicate a certain feeling or identity. As I got older, that interest grew into a desire to help other people express their ideas through design. Looking back, many of the qualities I had growing up—curiosity, creativity, attention to detail, and independence—are the same qualities that shaped me into the designer and entrepreneur I am today.
