Today we’d like to introduce you to Christopher Smith.
Hi Christopher, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
After graduating from California State University, Sacramento in 2014 with a degree in accounting, I began my career as an auditor, following earlier experience working for the State of California. I spent about a year and a half with a local accounting firm before realizing that, while the work was valuable, it wasn’t the path I wanted to pursue long term.
Through my involvement with my nonprofit organization, Kuroheim Foam Fighting, I had built strong connections within the convention community. Inspired by the creativity and entrepreneurial spirit of the exhibitors I met, I decided to take a leap of faith and build a business of my own.
I started by crafting handmade chain mail pieces, learning the ins and outs of running a small business while traveling to conventions. As my interests evolved and the tabletop role-playing game community continued to grow, I shifted my focus to creating custom dice and other TTRPG accessories. That decision proved to be the turning point. Combining creativity with a passion for gaming allowed me to build a business that reflects both my artistic interests and my desire to create products that bring people together around the gaming table.
Today, I continue to design and create unique tabletop gaming products while connecting with customers at conventions and events. Looking back, choosing to leave a traditional accounting career for entrepreneurship was a risk, but one that led me to a career that is both fulfilling and deeply rewarding.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not at all. Like most entrepreneurial journeys, mine has been full of unexpected challenges and constant learning. Leaving a stable career in accounting to start a business was a leap into the unknown. There were no guarantees of success, and I had to learn everything from product design and manufacturing to marketing, customer service, and managing finances.
In the beginning, I created chain mail products while figuring out how to build a brand and connect with customers at conventions. As the business evolved, I made the difficult decision to pivot into creating dice and tabletop role-playing game accessories. Changing direction always comes with risk, but it was the right move and allowed me to better align my work with my passions and the community I wanted to serve.
Beyond the usual challenges of running a small business, the broader economy has also had a significant impact. When people’s budgets get tighter, hobbies and collectibles are often among the first things they cut back on. That means convention attendance can fluctuate, customers become more selective with their spending, and sales become less predictable. Those realities have made it even more important to stay adaptable, continue creating products people are excited about, and find new ways to connect with the tabletop gaming community.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
One of the biggest surprises in this journey has been discovering my creative side. For most of my life, I never considered myself an artist. Coming from an accounting background, I saw myself as analytical, not artistic. Making dice completely changed that perspective. It challenged me to think creatively, experiment with color and design, and develop skills I never imagined I’d have. Creating something beautiful that becomes part of someone else’s gaming experience has given me a new appreciation for art, and it’s been one of the most rewarding parts of this career.
I own and operate a small business that specializes in handcrafted dice and accessories for the tabletop role-playing game community. Every product is designed with the goal of enhancing the gaming experience, whether it’s a unique set of resin dice, custom accessories, or other items that bring personality to the table. I primarily connect with customers through conventions, where I enjoy meeting fellow gamers and being part of the community that inspired me to start this business.
What I’m most proud of is building a business that combines creativity with craftsmanship. I started with no formal background in art or product design, but through persistence and a willingness to keep learning, I’ve developed products that people are excited to use in their own adventures.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
What I love most about Sacramento is its sense of community. It’s a city where people genuinely support local businesses, artists, and creators, and that encouragement has played a huge role in my journey as a small business owner.
Sacramento also has a thriving tabletop gaming and maker community. Whether it’s local game stores, conventions, or community events, there are so many opportunities to connect with people who share the same passions. Those connections have helped shape both my business and my creativity.
I also appreciate Sacramento’s balance. It’s large enough to offer opportunities and a diverse creative scene, but it still feels approachable and welcoming. It’s been a great place to build a business, meet incredible people, and turn a hobby into a career.
