Hidden Gems: Meet Kate Silverman of Precision Hand Therapy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kate Silverman.

Hi Kate, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always been drawn to helping people regain function after injury. That passion led me to become an occupational therapist specializing in the upper extremity, and eventually a Certified Hand Therapist—a designation that requires years of specialized clinical experience, thousands of hours treating complex upper-extremity conditions, and passing a rigorous board certification exam.

Throughout my career, I’ve treated patients across the lifespan—from infants to older adults—with conditions ranging from everyday hand injuries to the most complex upper-extremity trauma. Working alongside surgeons and multidisciplinary teams has reinforced my belief that exceptional outcomes come from both technical expertise and genuine human connection.

Then life unexpectedly changed.

When the Los Angeles fires displaced my family, I came to Santa Barbara with my two daughters and our dog, expecting it to be temporary. Instead, I made the decision to start over completely.

I founded Precision Hand Therapy from the ground up, combining my clinical expertise with an entrepreneurial leap of faith. Building a business while raising two daughters and establishing myself in a new community has been one of the most challenging and rewarding experiences of my life.

Today, I have the privilege of helping patients recover from some of the most complex upper-extremity injuries while continuing to grow a practice centered on precision, compassion, and collaboration. Through my work, I hope to show patients that healing is about more than recovering physically—it’s about rebuilding confidence, independence, and hope.

My own journey has taught me that resilience isn’t simply overcoming obstacles—it’s having the courage to rebuild when life changes your plans. Whether helping a patient regain the use of a hand or building a practice from the ground up, I’ve learned that meaningful growth often begins when you’re willing to start again.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Like many healthcare professionals, I’ve experienced periods of burnout, but the biggest turning point came when my daughters and I were forced to leave our home during the Los Angeles fires. We relocated to Santa Barbara with our dog and only what we could fit in the car. Instead of returning, I made the decision to start over.

Starting my own practice in a new community while raising two daughters as a single mother was both exciting and daunting. Every patient had to be earned. Every referral had to be built on trust. It required resilience, persistence, and a willingness to begin again, even after already having an established career as a Certified Hand Therapist.

That experience reinforced something I see every day in rehabilitation: rebuilding is rarely linear. Whether someone is recovering from a traumatic hand injury or rebuilding a life after unexpected change, progress comes from showing up consistently. Having lived through that myself has made me a more empathetic clinician, business owner, and person.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Precision Hand Therapy ?
Precision Hand Therapy is a private practice dedicated exclusively to the rehabilitation of the hand and upper extremity. As a Certified Hand Therapist, I work with patients recovering from complex injuries, tendon and nerve repairs, fractures, post-operative conditions, and chronic upper extremity disorders. My goal is not simply to restore movement, but to help people regain the ability to return to work, care for their families, pursue their passions, and reclaim their independence.

What sets Precision Hand Therapy apart is the level of individualized care every patient receives. I intentionally maintain close communication with surgeons, physicians, and other healthcare professionals because the best outcomes come from true collaboration. I believe rehabilitation is never a one-size-fits-all process; every treatment plan is tailored to the person’s goals, lifestyle, and stage of healing.

After relocating to Santa Barbara, I founded Precision Hand Therapy with the vision of creating the kind of practice where patients are known by name, never rushed, and receive evidence-based care delivered with compassion. Some of my proudest moments have been helping patients recover from devastating injuries that once seemed impossible to overcome and watching them return to the activities that define their lives.

Beyond the clinic, I am passionate about educating the public through social media by sharing real rehabilitation journeys—with patient permission—to highlight the science, skill, and hope behind hand therapy. My mission is to raise awareness of this specialized field while helping people understand that recovery is about far more than healing tissue; it’s about restoring function, confidence, and quality of life.

Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
If there’s one thing I’d want readers to take away, it’s that recovery is about far more than healing tissue. It’s about restoring confidence, independence, identity, and the ability to return to the moments that make life meaningful.

Becoming a Certified Hand Therapist was one of the most rigorous and rewarding milestones of my career, and it reinforced my commitment to providing highly specialized care for patients with complex upper-extremity injuries. When I relocated and started Precision Hand Therapy, it wasn’t just about opening a practice—it was about creating a place where patients receive individualized, evidence-based care and genuinely feel seen throughout their recovery.

Through education and storytelling, I also hope to help people better understand what hand therapy is and why specialized rehabilitation can make such a profound difference after injury or surgery. If sharing a patient’s journey helps someone seek the right care, gives another clinician a new perspective, or reminds someone that recovery is possible, then it’s worth telling the story.
