Today we’d like to introduce you to Conrad Dodd.
Conrad , we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Before diving into content creation, I spent 30 years selling luxury cars (Audi, Mercedes, BMW, and Maserati), most of that time as a General Manager or General Sales Manager. While the work was lucrative, the automotive business is demanding. It requires long hours and regularly pulls you away from weekends, holidays, and many of life’s milestones. I mention this because it helps explain why I eventually decided to leave and pursue what I’m doing now.
In 2017, after a trip to Ireland, I developed a passion for whiskey and bourbon rooted in the stories, history, and craft behind *uisce beatha*. That led me into the online whiskey community on YouTube, Instagram, and beyond, only to realize how little I actually knew. As I watched and learned, I noticed a clear gap: many creators focused on bottles that were completely out of reach for someone without the financial means or industry connections. There was far less information about the more commonly available, affordable options or solid alternatives to the most popular and heavily hunted releases.
In 2022, during the later stages of the COVID pandemic, I decided to fill that gap myself and began making review videos. Growth wasn’t immediate, but the positive feedback was encouraging. I discovered a genuinely welcoming community built around distilled spirits and the same things I loved about them: history, craftsmanship, science, and a lot of fun.
I spent the next two years working full-time at both my automotive job and creating content, eventually realizing the pace would burn me out and that I would need to make a choice. In 2023, I started exploring ways to turn whiskey into more than a hobby and began building something that could potentially become a real business, or at least an alternate path forward.
In 2024, I opened BondedBottleShop, an online liquor store featuring a personally curated selection chosen by me. At the time, I saw the store as a solution to two problems. First, there were often times I would recommend a product that half my audience couldn’t find due to the inconsistencies of liquor distribution and regional markets. With BondedBottleShop.com (BBS), they could now get it in 47 out of 50 states. Second, the store created a foundation for a business that could offer my wife, Joanna, and me a potential alternative path moving forward.
Also in 2024, we began traveling to distilleries and hand-selecting private barrels with members of our newly founded WB Patreon community, now known as the WB Family. These barrels were offered either exclusively or first to members. Bringing people along for private selections has become one of the most meaningful perks of the community. Dozens of members have joined us for experiences at legacy distilleries like Wild Turkey and Jack Daniel’s, often gaining behind-the-scenes access and hosted experiences that are otherwise difficult to arrange. We’ve also selected barrels with small craft distilleries owned and operated by families and other small business owners, which has allowed us to support people building something similar to what we’re building.
In 2025, BondedBottleShop did nearly a million dollars in sales. That gave Joanna and me the motivation we needed to leave our previous careers and focus full-time on building the community and business that started as content created simply for the love of it.
Now in 2026, Whiskey Bonded Media, LLC operates Bonded Bottle Shop and the Whiskey Bonded Shop (our swag store) full-time. This allows Joanna and me to travel the country to events, distilleries, and stores in search of whiskey. We partner with brands to share our passion with the community and to support companies we genuinely love. We only work with a brand when we love both the product and the people behind it. You can find some of the brands we partner with under the “Business and Collaboration” section at whiskeybonded.com.
Personally, this has been a dream come true: leaving a stressful career behind at 48 and working on my own terms doing something I truly enjoy. (I officially left the automotive industry in December 2025.) While our income is lower than it once was and still doesn’t qualify as “comfortable” living here in California, the business continues to grow thanks to the support of our best WB Family members. Many of them have become real friends, and some even feel like family, an unexpected and deeply valued benefit.
Unlike my previous career, this one feels open-ended. There doesn’t seem to be a ceiling on what we can build. We’re continuing to grow a community rooted in shared passion. We’ve created a positive space where people focus on what they have in common rather than what divides them, something that feels increasingly rare. Our members come from every walk of life, income level, age group, race, creed, religion, and orientation. Yet we all get along remarkably well, because we all love whiskey. Funny how that works.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The journey hasn’t been all smooth. Growth can be slow, and there are weeks when the hours spent creating and editing feel like a waste of time. I likely invested tens of thousands of hours before the work began to show any real return. Of course, there are always people who think you’re crazy for leaving a career to become a YouTuber, and those voices stay in the back of your mind. Even now, there are days when we look at the net income from our efforts and wonder if we’ve made a mistake. We’re still in the growth phase, and it will be some time before we feel we’ve reached a point of financial stability.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
This was tough to consider. Our business is media, marketing, and sales, but I spend more time on creative work. It’s an odd mix of business, educational content, and comedy. My social media is meant to be informative while staying light and fun. I have my opinions, but I don’t take myself too seriously. If we aren’t having fun, why are we doing it?
Even the store, while a serious business, is run in a light-hearted manner. You’ll find items listed with the description “you shouldn’t buy this,” and I mean it. We’re focused on our community’s experience and providing a trusted source of information that comes without pretense or judgment. It’s meant to be an escape from all the things you have to do. Fun and community come first. Profit will take care of itself.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Flexibility, creativity, and an ability to not take myself too seriously (weather I’m getting it right or getting it wrong.)
