Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Silva.
Hi Jessica, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I took business management courses at Cuesta College- not knowing exactly what I wanted to do with a business, but I quickly realized that I wanted to work with people as well as express my art. So in 2010, I decided I wanted to go the route of cosmetology.
I quickly realized the fulfillment I found in creating art and building relationships. But something was missing.
Having been raised locally within a family full of entrepreneurs, I decided to go ahead and open my own Hair Salon in Pismo Beach in 2019. I adorned the walls of my salon with my very own pour paintings inspired by the gorgeous beach along with my dad’s handmade craftsmanship for my shelving.
Six months after opening the Salon downtown Pismo, Covid hit. I was able to survive and keep the salon open for three years in Pismo beach, but after they hit the industry took, it was best at that time to move my salon to Grover Beach.
Since moving to Grover Beach, the hair studio has only grown in popularity. Our clients have enjoyed the atmosphere and the parking of course was a lot better than Pismo.
I’ve got talented hair artists working alongside me and it is so fulfilling.
I have since added my very own hair extension line called Masterpiece hair solutions. Clients can come into the salon for a free consultation and get an array of different hair extensions for their needs, including V clip, Ponytale, toppers and tape ins. They can also order anything custom that they might be interested in. Why I wanted to do this is because I wanted to offer 100% Remi human hair for our clients. I was tired of them going online and purchasing some cheap hair extensions that just don’t match their hair and asking us to try to match their hair to them. I wanted to create an experience that was tailored to them where we can be a part of their experience no matter what it is they were wanting.
We have a website and shipping available as well for clients who may not live close by.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Covid was definitely a challenge. My dad made me a wall to work outside at one point, a lot of stylists started working from home, so it was definitely a challenge to staff during those couple of years. There’s still some residual effects in the beauty industry after Covid.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I think something that definitely sets my business apart is that I really cultivate a team environment inside our Salon. It’s not as much about yours and mine. It’s ours.
I have employees working there and we all work together on the Client. For instance, some of us might have different strengths than others and so sometimes a client might have two of us working on them to get their best result. We have been told that our energy is so great at the salon and I think it’s due to this team mentality. Having my poor paintings on the wall is definitely classy and beachy, which is what I was going for.
A lot of my furniture was handmade from my late father.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The most important lesson for me has been to be patient and trust God’s plan.
Sometimes you have a plan and it may not always go how you plan or imagine.
It’s important to be flexible and not stress even when things seem to fall apart. There is always a plan B. I have found that often Times Plan B ends up better than you could’ve possibly imagined!
