Today we’d like to introduce you to Tedde Minogue.
Hi Tedde, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I studied Art History and have always been interested in objects that tell a story. Curating beauty was the common thread to everything, I did but flowers were in the background and I decided to move them to the forefront. I was drawn to this romantic notion of a very European flower cart and felt like there was a need for a bespoke product in Santa Barbara. My friend told me about the opportunity at The Post and my husband and I began the process of designing our little cart, which is a true labor of love. We combined industrial materials for practicality with touches of elegance, like Carrara countertops which gives the cart a sense of place.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I am learning so much everyday and can see the progress that has been made since we have opened. Working with a material that is ephemeral is always a challenge but one that I love. As a small business owner I have had to do things that are out of my comfort zone and wear all the hats, when I really shouldn’t be wearing all of them. I know what my strengths are and let’s just say it lies in the creative. It’s so easy for me to go deep into my little world of rituals, creating but I have to remind myself to step out to deal with the tasks that I want to avoid. The most successful people I know advised me that it’s good to start doing it all because you get to learn your business, but I’m ready to reach a place where I can offload some of the tasks.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
At Scenery we use unique blooms and bespoke vessels to create arrangements that often have a touch of whimsy. I felt like there’s so much waste in the floral business and often when I got arrangements I was overwhelmed by it, I loathed discarding the blocks of green foam and then was left with a vase that often sat in a cupboard for a year before I sent it to goodwill. We love taking an item, like a teacup and placing a few sweet little blooms in it and have our customer write their own little note for their friend’s birthday. When I create arrangements for my clients I really take note of their space and style so that I am customizing something for them, and it’s always unique. I am most proud of being a happy respite for people. everyone that works for me gets that at the end of the day we’re selling flowers and we need to convey that positivity because that’s what we’re there for. The customers get such delight in seeing us put our buckets out each day and create… I love that.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
This is a big one. I have such a great support system and community of talented people that have been so encouraging. They have shown me that we all have to help each other, and value one another. . I worked with some really incredible women at Likely Story Strategies that really helped me to establish some better systems. My family have been my biggest cheerleaders and always been great counsel. At the end pf the day my husband and kids are the ones that show up to help me set up tables for an event or listen to my tales of the day and I’m very grateful for that.
